O2/ Be Unlimited

You'll probably want to change over to broadcom chipset router if/when you upgrade to ADSL2+ with Be/o2. Iirc, the older G models (pre v4?) use the texas instruments chipset and won't hold up very well with adsl2+.

Yeah I was thinking this myself, will probably go for a DG834GT. Want to stick with Netgear as iv been using this one for nearly a year and a half with absolutly no problems what so ever.

I quite like the GT myself, though I've heard the N can be a little more stable.

Best thing to do is to buy a sky-branded GT from 'a well known auction site' and then flash it back to standard Netgear firmware (or better, the DGTeam custom firmware). It's not particularly hard to do and you can get the sky routers for ~£10.

Good thinking batman :)

Just got my £35 quidco put into paypal, signed up in Jan/Feb.

(-£5 due to quidco admin fees)

Excellent ISP, can't speak for O2 but haven't heard a single horror story/complaint for either.

What sort of speeds could I get?

I currently have the below stats

linestat.JPG
and currently syncing at

DownStream Connection Speed 6912 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps

on UKFSN ADSL Max.

Youd get more than me. I sync at 13mbps down and 1.3 up on the £18 package, using dmt to improve the noise margin ratio i can get close to 15mbps.

I have a 32dB attenuation and without any tweaking a noise margin of 6.5dB. I can get the noise margin down to 3dB without any instability.

I can also confirm quidco works, as i got the £55 a couple of months after applying. There is also a free starter pack code somewhere which I found after I applied which saves you £24.

O2 is cheaper, but I believe that DMT cannot be used on their routers.

You're better off getting a cheap sky branded GT from 'auctiononia' and reflashing it to DGTeam firmware anyhow. More stable and compatible than the BeBox/o2Box.

One thing to keep in mind when you play with attenuation figures is that in moving from ADSL1 to ADSL2+ you often see a jump of anything from 2 to 6 points of attenuation. Make sure any calculator you use takes this into account as it can/will effect your final connection speed.

edit : can't be right - I'll double check at home - must be getting figures confused with something else.

Be are really good providers imo. The told me i should get 8-10mb and got 12 on activation. Highest BT and pipex gave me was 5mb.

their phone support is ok, better than most but their forum and ticket support system is very good and you get responses quickly.

Activation was as promised -5days after my order.

The router they supply is crap fo wireless, but you can make it in modem only mode and then use your own wireless router - this is what i did. I just hope they dont get too popular and then go down hill like the others have

Indeed. That's been a worry for a number of years for some of us :p However, the 3 month contract means at least we can jump ship relatively easily if things go pear-shaped.

Can you do that with the 585v6 router? The wireless performance is rubbish and i have a spare wireless router. Do you simply use an ethernet cable from a LAN port to the ethernet input on the wireless router?

ADSL > BeBox > WAN port on 2nd router. And the BeBox in bridge mode of course.

Cheers. How do you get it into bridge mode? Do you need to use CLI? Or does the option only come up after connecting to another router?

edit: nvm found it
