I'm trying to set up my own router with recently-activated o2 broadband, but its refusing to give me an Internet connection T the minute and I wondered if anyone had any experience with this kind of thing? As per the instructions on o2 help, I've set it up with no login required, it won't let me leave the username as blank otherwise. As far as I can tell, all settings are correct, but its not getting an IP or giving me any sort of connection. Is it a case of waiting a while, as I read somewhere else? Its been about an hour since I made the changes. Cheers

I had the same problem trying to setup a linksys router, what you need is the username from o2 its 6 random numbers i.e. [email protected]

If you call them they'll let you know what they are, also make sure that the router is set to PPPoA mode. Hope this helps

cheers bud, you pit me on the right track. Contrary to what was said on the o2 website, I did need my username and password as normal. Had to call up for the password, it was starred out in the supplied router's interface, though I got the username this way. Reckon they should supply all this sort of info in the welcome letter for us geeks!

Anyway, that's sorted but I'm not sure whats going on with the speed at the minute. The router syncs at 8000kbps, but I'm only getting 50ks download speed on some quick testing. My old connection, at a different address, pretty much managed to download at the sync speed. Are things going to improve over the course of the first week, or is the router sync speed kidding me?

Mine took a few days to sort itself out, my router has synched and 5.4 and on a throughut test, im getting 4.8 so not too bad

Ok, I'll give it some time then. I was just a bit concerned, as I was expecting much better initial speeds than half a megabyte! That's what I was getting at my old address, and here I'm much closer to the exchange, and the router's reporting much less noise on the line (about half what it was before).

One other thing I'm confused about is that when I set Multiplexing to LLC based, with a VCI of 0 and VPI of 101 - as is suggested by O2 - the router won't connect. It does work with the standard VC-Based, 0-38 settings though. Does this have the potential to cause problems for my speed?

Thanks for clearing that up tolien. To be honest, I might switch back to the o2 box for the next week or so, if I have to call them about poor speeds, I'm guessing they'll be disinclined to help if I'm using my own router! Can always switch back if and when things improve.
