Hey guys, long one coming up!

Buying a house which we'll get 2 weeks tomorrow, the current owners are with sky for everything, an say they have already cancelled their phone and broadband (base package) and are keping the tv on for the final month, no problem, no cable in the area so will stick with Sky for TV, and thinking of o2 for internet (and therefore phone).

o2 have said from August 18th they SHOULD be bale to activate phone lines themselves, but it might not end up being on that date, BT have said if the phone line is inactive, they can do it for £128  and then o2 can take the line over, but I know BT book back a few weeks, so if come the 18th o2 cannot do the migration, its a further 2-3 weeks plus until we get any sort of connection.

We really want to get the o2 setup as quickly as possible, the local exchange is LLU enabled so that "should" ease some of the pain of going from Virgin.

Does anyone have any idea of anything I'mmissing etc.. my first house move so I may (hopefully) be missing something that could speed things up!

Any advice would be greatfully recieved!

Thanks!

Find out if the line is currently active and what the number is. afaik you only pay the £128 if the line has been inactive for 3 months or more, or if the previous tenant has been disconnected for non-payment etc.

My friend moved in to a flat, had to pay £128 for the line connection, waited three weeks for that then had to wait another week for O2! From what you've said though, I'd imagine it'll be a simple transfer of BT details and then an order with O2. Bear in mind you won't be able to order broadband until your bank details have been registered to the new address.

yeah, its all a big bundle of no fun, was trying to call Sky to see if they would reactivate the phone line for free if I kept phone with them (Not sure if o2 would let me use a sky phone line) and got some geordie monstrosaty who got my postcod wrong 7 times and couldn't spell Leicester :(

This is getting harder than it should be!!

Hmm, ok, bugger, so would the procedure be through BT or Sky as the line was most recently with sky?

So confused right now!! hehe

I think these 128 pounds activation fees are ridiculous, I don't know any other country that does it, come on, that's 200 dollars man. You paying them to spend your money, how much do you think that engineer makes an hour? 7-8 pounds tops.

Just for the record, O2 LLU is excellent. Never had a bit of bother with it and their CS folk are usually top quality. I swapped over from AOHell to O2 a couple of years ago and haven't looked back since. The changeover was smooth and hassle free once I had finally managed to prise the MAC from AOHell.

Thanks Azza, looks handy but the deal expired in June, and if I'm not mistaken having to stick with BT for 18 months would make it nigh on impossible to get the line over to o2 without paying off the remainder of the contract?

Really? Oh, ok, on the phone o2 never mentioned that (I guess caue they want me to take their line rental, too!) So BT line will still enable me to get o2 LLU broadband @ £10ppm?

God, at this rate things could be making sense soon :D hehe

Yes and yes, no doubt they'd want you to switch to their line rental but there's no requirement to do so!

Basically, get a BT line installed, register your bank account to your new address and order O2 online through Quidco (for some money back goodness ).

You need a BT line for O2 broadband, if you want O2 phone you would have to transfer line rental from BT to O2, which would mean buying out the rest of the contract.

All you have to do is ring up BT to get the line reactivated and as bentfl says just order the internet online. :)

And it is still going mate.

Ahh ok, nice, would that be the same is it was a Sky line? (The current/soon to be previous owners) were with Sky, and wasn't sure if I went with them for TV I could get the line with them, too, hopefully at no cost!

Edit:

Thanks Azza, looks good, will give them a bell, think I need to prise the current number from the clutches of the Estate Agents first! :(

Spoken to BT who are still insisting that it is £128 and that no such offer exists, I've placed a temporary order with them but really hope that o can get a date set for line installs, really can't do with being without internet access for more than a week, as my girfriend works freeland and really needs acess for her work. Not to mention, I'd really miss it!!!

Kinda off topic but I have O2 and if your going to be online gaming stay away its awful. I had the BT home hub before and that was flawless. Just my 2 pence

Just stick at it mate, I'm sure you'll come across some one who has an idea what they are talking about after a couple of phone calls. :D
