Argh, O2 are starting to annoy me now.
So since the O2/BeThere broadband network upgrade in my area on Thursday 18/04/2013 I have had worse pings from TBQM (about 100%), Speedtest.net to my nearest georapgical server is about a third of the speed (it's fine to other servers though, and that server is fine from other connections, so that could be weird routing), and my Static IP address has gone and is dynamic instead. At least it had kept the Annex M setting, and speedtests to other servers were fine.
So, being logical, I thought I'd only deal with one problem at a time. I contacted O2 rep using the online chat and asked them what's happened to my static IP address now that I've been on dynamic ones for a week. In the emails I'd received about the upgrade it had said that "If you have a static IP address we'll email you with the new address soon", but I hadn't heard anything yet.
The rep said that to give me a static IP would be an extra £5.11 per month. I queried this, as I was not paying this extra charge previously and the emails hadn't mentioned anything about there being an extra charge. He came back and said that I did not previously have a static IP address, and that my previous IP address had just stayed the same as I hadn't turned the router off for a while. I then pointed out to him that this was incorrect, as I would turn my router off when going away on holiday for a month but would then come back, turn it on, and pick up the same static IP address that I had had ever since I joined O2 many years ago.
I guess this must have annoyed him (the customer surely can't be right!?
) as then I just got an error saying that the agent was unavailable and the error then just kept repeating. Great, he had disconnected me
.
Then a couple of minutes later my connection drops.
That's rather odd, as my line is 100% stable and in the TBQM I can see that it never drops!
Waited a few minutes but nope, wouldn't reconnect.
Tried changing the VCI setting on my modem from 101 to 102 and back again but nope, it isn't working.
Power cycled everything a few times but nope, it's not working.
Great, he has nuked my connection or it's just a massive coincidence.
So now swearing at it I go back into my modem and reset all the settings. I was previously running on Annex M (double upload), with the Extend RTC frequency option turned on, and had the target SNR dialled down to 25%. But now let's just reset everything, I've had no internet for about an hour and I'm getting ****ed off.
Boom, it's back working. But what's this, my sync is now about a third of what it was previously. ARGH.

Telnet into the modem and see it's running on G.DMT - previously my modem was set to only connect at Annex M, but in resetting it I had enabled all protocols (G.DMT, G.922.1, G.922.3, G.922.5, etc). OK then, lets try and kick it off of ADSL1 and get back onto ADSL2, but without the double upload. Unticked the G.DMT option, but leaving all other protocols available, but nope. Won't connect. Back to enabling all protocols.
So yesterday I was running:
And now:
Great. A third of the speed. All because I dared to question the rep when he said that to get back on a Static IP like I had before the new network upgrade would now be an extra £5.11 per month.
So other than being thoroughly annoyed, what do I do now? How am I going to get my connection back onto ADSL2?
I'm willing to forgo the Annex M upload (it got me +10% on the upload), the Static IP address, and the pings of the old network… but running at a third of the speed it was yesterday isn't fun!
