O2 contact question

Basically I'm on O2 with no reception due to moving. They said I need to pay £300 to exit the sim only contact, as 24 months contract.

If you're on a 24 month contract with O2, you can upgrade to 30 contact (1GB £20) it seems. Then you'd be able to exit that contact and only have to pay £20, right?

Why would they let you switch from a 24 month contract to monthly?

No they will not let you out of a contract.

Actually I have switched the two Sims to EE. O2 let you upgrade to a 30 day rolling contract and then you can obviously just request the pac code and leave.
