Wife has a phone thru O2, the contract is expiring soon.

O2 split their bills now, so you know what you're paying for the 'phone' and what you are paying for the 'airtime'.

So the phone bit is about to expire.
I don't quite understand their airtime contracts however.

Seems she is paying slightly over £24 for 15Gb data, offers of 5GB data for £21 or 30Gb data for £27 are on the website.
Yet if one takes a sim only with them, you can get 15Gb of data for £15 a month.

Does one get anything of benefit from being on their contract stuff?
When it expires are they likely to offer anything, as their current upgrades are insanely priced?

Is it an easy matter to flick over to PAYG?

Drop down to a sim only o2 contract

I picked up a sim only for £8 with 12GB, you still get all the Priority benefits on sim only and 5G

Have a look at uSwitch as well - I have been with O2 sim-only forever and always change contracts as needed through uSwitch at renewal time. It's generally a lot cheaper than going with O2 directly. I think I am currently paying £10 a month for unlimited calls, texts, and 25GB of data on a 12-month sim-only O2 contract.

Looking on there now as the above post you can get 20GB for £8 a month, or 30GB for £10.

I went from a mate 20 pro contract £20 month over 2 yrs with o2 to a uswitch 6gb £6 month (was the best at the time) but it was all very seamless the uswitch signup had a tab that asked are you already on o2 ,so straight to the o2 site same sim and no billing errors

Just sorted my father-in-law a SIM only deal with O2 via uSwitch £8/month for 20gb. He had to pay the balance owed on the phone to release him from his contract, then everything was very straightforward and the new 12 month contract started immediately.
