O2 give me free phone

Well got something in the post about a month back from O2 saying that sa i spend on average over £40 i can get any free phone from them 3 months before my contract ends. im wondering if this means i will then have to sign up for another 12/18 months contract, or i just get the phone and then i can do whatever i want when my contract ends?

It'll mean that by getting an upgrade phone, you'll have to signup to another 12/18 month contract
