I've just been informed by an o2 CS agent that o2 don't do fastpath. Is this person just misinformed - I was told be "Si MPS" on here that o2 have recently updated their systems to allow them to offer fastpath.

Whats Fastpath?

The opposite to having interleaving enabled. Fastpath can give a higher sync speed on reasonably decent lines (I'm on Be and mine went up from 17300kbps ish when interleaved to 18000kbps ish on fastpath). Interleaving is error correction which makes the line more stable but is generally only needed for longer lines, however, it does so at the expense of latency. To give another example, on my connection average ping times to UK servers with Interleaving enabled were around 25ms but now with fastpath it's an average of 9ms.

In short, if you have a decent attenuation and sync rate, you should give fastpath a try as it'll likely increase sync rate further and reduce latency.

Not particularly, not that it's important - it's the number of errors that you're interested in because if they don't get corrected, they'll manifest as packet loss...

You'd have to be pushing your line pretty far to get serious packet loss. But I guess the temptation is always there...and some people don't really keep an eye on their error count.

A lot of people prefer to have fastpath on even if it means a lower connection rate - improvements in pings and the 'feel' of the connection (completely subjective and possibly imagined, but I definitely *think* I notice it) make it worth it.

do o2 do fastpath then?can i ask to be put immediately on fastpath when i order it later today?

i have good attenuation and noise margins on my line and it syncs at highest speeds for my 8meg due to living very close to the exchange so fastpath should be ok hopefully.

What are your attenuation/snr figures at then?

You might run into troubles as the CS agents aren't fully aware that fastpath is now available...so it may involve nagging them a bit/ringing back a few times until you get someone that knows what they're talking about.

To be fair to them, the ability to activate fastpath has only just been given to the CS agents.

Your noise margin is a little low on the downstream but yeah..that's a very nice attenuation :) Kind of odd that it's only 4 on the upstream and 14 on the downstream though.. Strange.

As you've already guessed, you should be able to get ~20mbit.
