Right then...

My mum's on O2 PAYG, had the same SIM card for about 11 years, back when the 'tariff' or whatever was called 'U'. She's never been bothered about getting nothing free for her monies, but I keep insisting she should get more than the 10p messages and 30p/min calls or whatever she has to have.

Only probably uses about a maximum of £10 a month, so getting a Simplicity SIM isn't worth it and she doesn't want to change her number, categorically. So, my question is - does anyone know of an easy way for her to move onto a different style of PAYG tariff where she gets something free every month? I did try one a while ago, texting UNLIMITED to a number - but that didn't have the desired effects, can't remember what it was meant to do.

This probably now doesn't make sense, does anybody get me? :)

Simplicity (or SIM Only) is probably the only way forward.
For £10 per month she'll get 150 mins and 300 text - so it'll cost her £10 per month and she'll never go over it.
The SIM Only deals are the cheapest contracts you can get which "give you something free" each month.
All 4 networks have SIM only deals and they all start at £10.

Obviously there is PAYG.
However PAYG comes with nothing free unless you Top-Up each month.
Usually that Top-Up is £10 and then you'll start to see some freebies.

So for a low user the choice really would be:

PAYG - But unless you're putting £10 on each month then expect to be paying for each call and each text.
£10 SIM Only - Free calls and text, person highly unlikely to go over allowance, but it will be £10 every month.

The £10 simplicity gives you 150mins more than topping up £10 on PAYG does. You should be able to switch to a different PAYG tariff simply by calling O2.

with the £10 topup you get 300 free texts and you still keep the tenner, which can be used to get a bolton like "unlimited" internet for £7.50. This still allows £2.50 to do with as you please :D

Yeah, getting those free messages with the topup would be more useful. She spends a maximum of £10 a month, in a quiet month might only spend a couple of quid, so committing to a Simplicity tariff isn't preferable, as that's definitely going to cost £120 a year.

She also tops up at Boots when she has mega Advantage Card multiplier vouchers and ends up saving £5 in £20 or such. Google brings up lots of different things about PAYG tariffs, seems different people get different offers depending on where you see them... Do I need to give them a ring, or is there something I can text just to get switched over?

If your number is currently on O2 Pay & Go, no PAC code is required to transfer your existing number across to your new SIM card. Just call customer care on 08705 678678, and your number and any existing balance will be transferred within 2 working days.

O2 are always giving out free SIM cards so no need to pay either if your mum doesn't want a new phone.

Aha! They let you do that now? Surely it would be easier for them just to change the 'tariff' on the existing SIM, rather than getting a new SIM?

I'll order a free one and get it sorted before she needs to top up again.
