Hi all,

I've been with o2 broadband for about 8 weeks now, it's been a pretty unsatisfactory 8 weeks but there is not a lot I can do regarding changing ISP until my contract is over with them (although buying out my contract is a real possibility as I'm getting more and more frustrated about the speed)

I came from Sky, the best connection where I live is up to 8mb, a while ago I posted the below stats from my router when on Sky:

Here are the o2 stats:

Can anyone see why from these why I should have such a poor connection with o2 than Sky (I honestly never thought this would be possible!)

The main problems I'm having are on my Xbox 360, playing Modern warfare 2 or FIFA 10 95% of the time I'll have a 2 bar connection, those of you who play these games that's pretty poor. My friends that I came with who live near me, consistently have 3 or more, they're on the same exchange (not on o2)

So I'm lost what to do next. I use a flashed Netgear DG834GT, I used this on both the Sky and o2 connections, I'm wondering if this could be at fault?

Can anyone recommend anything that I could do/try to improve the connection?

I'm really not wanting to spend £200 to cancel my contract. May i just add, when I first got o2, FIFA or MW were not out so unfortunately I never really tested the gaming side to things, it was only when the 30 day cooling off period had ran out that I had experienced these problems.

ANY help greatly appreciated.

Your sync rate's a good bit lower for the same SNR margin and attenuation, but all of that should be common to both ISPs with BT Wholesale. Was interleaving enabled with Sky and is it enabled with O2?

Not sure to be honest, I've switched back to the o2 router and it's improved slightly on MW2 (what I'm using to test)

Is that a setting on the router?

Have you tried contacting o2 to see if they can improve your line speed?

Yes, they just gave me the "up to 8mb" speech, and they can't do anything about the speeds I'm receiving.

I have a similar situation at this property I own. When I used to live there, I had Plusnet as my ISP and had no issues with random disconnections. Then I moved out, terminated the BT phone line and rented it out.

Then when I had new tenants move in, I reactivated the BT line, got a new number and got O2 broadband as the ISP in March 2009. It was fine until summer when I would get called by my tenants (who speak little English and don't have a clue about computers) saying that they would get disconnected. It would happen every fortnight or so, and everytime I went over, I would just log on the 192.168.2.1 thing and reconnect. All was fine right away. But then it would keep happening and it got annoying, mainly because there were no clues whatsoever to help me identify the source of the problem, as I'm not there when it disconnects.

I've e-mailed O2 a few times; once a guy said there was a minor discrepancy with the line when I called 2 months ago and that he would immediately fix it on his end. It was ok for 3 weeks before I got yet another call from my tenants. I've tried resetting and reconfiguring the O2 Wireless Box II and my spare Belkin54G routers, but still get these disconnects. I've now requested a technician to come and have a look.

I hate sorting out networking issues; it's hard determining what causes the issue, especially when you aren't there when disconnects occur. I dunno if O2 is poor, it's the phone line, the telephone exchange, the router, the router software, the users, the cables, the filter etc... Maybe this doesn't help your case much but I felt like ranting as I got yet another call an hour ago, and now they want me to buy a 'certain thing', which I'm guessing they are referring to a new router, but I would have no idea if this would actually solve the issue!

An old trick I used to do Be was to resync in the early hours. Generally I got better speeds doing it. Not sure if this works for other ISPs. Not tried it with Sky as I really don't care about my speed anymore. I am over a mile from my exchange just in straight-line distance. So I am lucky to see 4mb!
