Could someone check these line stats - been having some problems lately in the evenings. Have changed DNS servers to Google's as a test but still seeing some slow 2mb speeds from a 6mb line. Things seem fine at the moment but does this shed any light?

Sorry for hijacking your thread, but since there are already 2 O2 threads on the 1st page, I thought I'd just post in one of them.

I don't know if it's the same for you, but ever since I've been with them I've had pretty horrible days where my broadband has felt like 56k.

Over the last 4 to 5 days, it's been absolutely shocking. Download speeds haven't passed 40kb/s, I can't watch Youtube and websites take ages to load. It's hasn't improved at all, no matter what time of day it is.

I sent them an email. I was promised a reply in 24 hours and it's now been almost 3 days. I'm going to phone them up today and let them know that I'm less than impressed.

Is it possible for me to break away from my contract early? I've had enough of this crap.

With re: to the OP, you have quite a few HEC errors as well as tonnes of FEC errors. This suggests that although your line can sync at 6mbit, it isn't really stable at that.

The first thing I would check is whether you are currently set to "fastpath", I cant tell you how to do that with o2, with BE its just a case of ticking a box in your account page, I dont know if o2 offer the same, if not you will need to email them and ask. If it is on, I would suggest turning it off. You will probably lose some of your sync speed and your pings may go up, but at least it will make for a stable line.

Alternatively, try a higher SNR profile, though you seem to be currently set at 7dB anyway, which is quite high. Again, with BE, its a tick box and you set between 3, 6 and 9. Assuming fastpath doesnt help, ask them to up your SNR margin to 9. Again, you will lose sync speed, hopefully to gain stability.

Also worth seeing if theres any fault on your line.

Find your BT master socket (assuming you have one) and undo the two screws on the front, you will see a seperate phone socket, this is your master socket. Find yourself an old corded phone and plug into this master socket and dial 17070. This is the quiet line test supplied by BT, simply listen for any crackling etc. If you have any then theres a fault with your BT line, get them to sort it.

Now put it all back together and repeat. but from the normal socket on the front. If you hear anything now, the problem is in your internal wiring, this will cost you money to fix :) (unless you do it yourself of course)

Finally, unscrew your socket again and plug the router directly into the master socket (with a filter oc) and see if that helps with your stability. If it does then its you internal wiring again.

I would probably do the master socket thing first, then the fastpath thing, then as a last resort, have your SNR margin upped.

Thanks for that info, really useful. I've unscrewed the faceplate off the BT line and its not the master socket! Not sure where it is then and maybe I don't have one. Will try your other suggestions and grab a phone from somewhere.

Cheers

Tim

Just to clarify something as well, changing DNS servers will in no way increase your download speed, it will only decrease the resolution time (time it takes to turn a domain name into an IP address).

Not all houses have a master socket.

All it is doing is isolating your internal wiring (extensions) etc and giving you a direct link to the BT cable. It's worth having a poke around under the stairs and the like, make sure you dont have one, if you do, then plugging the router in there is really advisable.

Right, after replacing my router with a netgear dg834, new rj11 cable and removing the ring wire (and upgrading my o2 account) I ended up going from 6.5 mb to 9.2mb.

Here's the stats
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN DHCP Client 58190 92033 0 4100 66939 00:30:56
LAN 10M/100M 104058 81129 0 18146 1525 02:01:21

ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 9052 kbps 1256 kbps
Line Attenuation 39.0 db 17.5 db
Noise Margin 6.4 db 7.1 db

So happier now and wondering whether its worth fitting this xte faceplate? There is no master socket in this property as far as I can tell.

EDIT: with the DGteam firmware and the SNR on 1% (!) I managed around 1.1 mbps. Not bad considering O2 think my line is capable of 7mb! Not sure how stable this will be though.
