Over there...
Was just speaking to customer services about my phone, and saw they were offering upto 20mb BBand now (was only 16 when i took my account out 14 months ago). I currently connect aroun 7mbps.

So i enquired if i could get my line speed increased and she tried to sell me a router. I said i thought i was limited by my line speed but she seemed to think this new router could get me aster speeds, offered on a "free" trial without extension to my contract.

I didnt bother yet, as i wanted to look into it, but but has anyone got one of these new wonder routers, know anything about them, or had any experiences with them?

Previously i had an O2 router box III or some such, and it was a thomson box which was totally useless. I sacked it off and bought my own.

Anyone have any info?

Some routers ar ebetter then others at sync speeds and bit loading but there is not much between them.

Give us your line stats and we can see what you should be getting.

Thanks worth remembering that those numbers are with a non-official router (if that makes a difference).

Downstream numbers first, Upstream numbers in brackets:

SNR Margin: 4.0 (6.2) db
Line Attentuation: 43.8 (21) db
Data Rate: 9795 (1077) kbps
Max Rate: 11952 (1080) kbps
Power: 19.0(11.3) dbm

max speed you will ever get on adsl or adsl2 or adsl2+ is 7.5mbit.

When it says max rate in your router it is not basing it on the 6db target SNRM, so dont worry if that is reporting a high number.

If you getting 7mbit now, you doing as good as you can expect. Might be able to squeeze out a few extra 100 kbps with a faceplate filter/better router but you not going to get much more

thanks mate, thats what i wanted to hear i guess (not worried about the few extra kbps tbh)

the new router is still a thomson box. it has a usb port for connecting hard drives/printers to share on the network. it won't connect any faster than the old ones.

Just to be a pedant and point out a small error O2 have always offered 20mbps broadband since launch. ;)

Your line estimate probably wasn't up to that though hence you were only offered the 16mbps package.

quite true, its ok as a router but hasnt synced any faster than my old o2 router

Try getting an old sky router (DG834GT) and flash it with DGTeam, then tweak the SNR. This is what I've done and I move from ~4.3 to ~6.0; about the best I get :-/

*mumbles about rubbish line, no cable, no fibre*
