O2 Unlocking form for iPhones

I've just received a text.

We are unable to unlock your iPhone. For more information & help please go to www.o2.co.uk/unlockmyiphone

When I check the link, it looks as though this is the problem.
You may have not typed in the correct IMEI number (found by keying *#06# on your iPhone) and the correct mobile phone number. If these don't match the numbers we have on our system, then the iPhone can't be unlocked.

My IMEI will be different to their records because Apple have swapped it after it developed a fault. I can't accept they can't unlock it because of this so I feel a call to O2 coming on.

They have a 24 hour customer service number?

What do you mean exactly?

I bought the phone offline (for £538 or whatever it was) and it didn't come with a sim card. I thought it would be unlocked but it wasn't, it would still only work on O2.

I'm on Orange so you can guess the rest. I'd like to be able to use it on Orange however without having to resort to doing that thing that can't be talked about.

let me know how you get on, as I need mine unlocked as i'm about to jet off on business for 8 weeks in December and it would be good to be able to pick up a local simcard when i'm abroad rather be stuck with the blackberry for everything

I assumed apple told o2 my new imei number when they swapped mine out?

thinking about it i do recall when i got mine switched out that the guy asked something about whether i had insurance to which i said no. I then asked why and he said something about notifying o2 of the imei number change for insurance purposes

fun and games with o2 customer service tomorrow then.

why can things never be simple.

I originally bought a 3G iphone which the contract ends in jan.

Thing is i sold the 3g and bought a 3GS on payg but im using the contract sim which is due for renewal in January.

I wonder if ill get away with unlocking the 3gs on my 3g contract sim.

Ive filled the form in...hope i can unlock rather than 12months after the 3gs purchase.

Nope. I've seen a number of Tweets from people with the same problem. This is going to be a common issue.

Great, think I'm going to have the same issue too. My iPhone has just been swapped out under Apple Care, what's the betting they haven't updated o2... Gonna mail them now to ask.

Exactly the same as me then... let us know how you get on please, as I haven’t bothered filling the form in yet!

Has anybody had a successful unlock yet? :) I've not heard anything but I submitted the form a few days ago so I'm hoping there isn't a problem.

I phoned O2 on the 2302 number above, the doris was very apologetic, took my phone number and IMEI number and said she'll put it through manually.

She said there was a problem with some IMEI numbers not being registered on the unlocking form correctly so I'd suggest trying it online first and if you get the same issue that I had then giving them a call. She really was very helpful.

I have 13 months left on my 3GS contract, if I get it unlocked I assume I keep the contract (They dont just make me pay it off in one go?)

It would be useful if I wanted to get a different carrier for some reason!
