I can't seem to kill anything bigger than a rat.

I got the Wynon Priory quest and went to Kvatch to kill some daedra but right from the get go my weapons seem totally ineffectual.

I usually end up with 3 of them fireballing me to death within 10 seconds. I tried loads of different tactics. Sneaking past, trying to pick them off one by one etc but it always ends in my death. By the time I've switched from fireballs to heal they have usually launched 2-3 fireballs at me and i'm dead.

I did stick 5 (I counted them sticking out) iron arrows in one and still had to hit him around 3-5 times with my claymore before he died :(

Meanwhile his two mates were happily frying my ass.

Sounds to me like you're a jack of all trades and master of none. If you chose one of the game's default classes, you will tend to level up quickly without improving your combat skills as much as you are able. The baddies level up with you so they can become more powerful.

But yes, try lowering the difficulty slider first and see how you get on.

Are you hitting them with a cabbage? It should be fairly easy to dodge the fireballs. Then as other people have said get some armour on you.

I find it easier if I level up a bit before starting any quests. I didnt even start any until I reached the max level of 50, with all my major skills at master level :p

I would try lvling up a bit and perhaps doing a few of the quests in and around chorrol (next to weynon priory). Gives you a much better feel for the game early on and will also help you pick up some money/decent gear.

What class/character are you playing?

Levelling up makes the game harder if anything.

ah so there is a diffculty slider...

/goes off to investigate hehe

Many thanks for all your replies

@ .one. glad to have made you laugh :D

I also had this problem. I spent much time running like hell in my first few hours :D First thing you have to keep in mind is that this is an RPG, ie. there is a lot more to do than just the main quest. In fact, to get past this Kvatch part, you will have to do a lot of sword practice before you can get past the goblins. So, join guilds and find some good weapons and armour.

And for the love of man, don't turn the difficulty to Easy...

Depends how you lvl your char up tho. Oblivion isnt very forgiving if you try and make youself a "jack of all trades" as mentioned above. A couple of lvls and a bit of specialisation be it armour, swords, bows, magic or whatever will make things so much easier as well as giving you a better understanding of the game mechanics.

Doing some of the main quest later on at lvl 40+ is tough tho i agree!

The key is to have skills you dont use as your major skills. That way you can level up your important skills without levelling up your character. Oh and of course dont sleep. Its a very easy system to exploit.

The easiest way to beat the game is to become a conjurer. Some of the creatures you can conjure up just wipe the floor with most of the enemies in the game.
