So I am thinking of upgrading my Arcam rPAC with a main powered setup.

Both the Objective 02 and the Schiit amps / DAC's come in at around the same price for the separates.

Question is, which setup is better and would one go for the separates or get the combined option? Or is there a better option for sub £200?

Or am I thinking of wasting £200 just for minimal gains considering my main headphones are now just the AKG K550 MK2?

Just mulling it over at the moment as fancy buying myself a Christmas present.

If it's just an amp you want, rather than a DAC too, then Schiit has just released the Vali 2 which is a tube hybrid amp.
It has a gain switch, is not microphonic (unlike the original Vali), has a very low noise floor so no background hiss with sensitive headphones / IEMs, pre-out sockets and the ability to use a wide range of tubes to tailor the sound to your tastes.
You can get it from Electromod for £146

The Schiit Magni and 02 are similar sounding. The Vali is schiits best amp IMO. Vali 2 will no doubt be great. What I like about the original Vali is no tube rolling hassle. The Odac and Modi are about equal.

Dunno what the availability is like on the O2 atm - think OcUK has stopped stocking it and most places that still have it are importing the JDS labs one at ridiculous prices which kind of defeats the point.

Well you can get the combined 02 + ODAC combo from Massdrop atm for $207 which is about £138 delivered.

I would rather buy the Epiphany version but it is £180.00.

yup epiphany acoustics have vanished of the face of the planet

last news post and tweet was may :(

Personally I prefer the look of the schiit stuff but that is all there really is in it when comparing the magni stack and the o2.

The vali though is immense and well worth considering... Especially the new vali2. Hell some people run very very high end phones from a vali with no complaint...doesn't happen often but nonetheless it is a hell of a amp for the price.

Vali 2 is so new though so not sure how good it will be...although the option to tube roll at that price has to appeal to plenty.....personally the simplicity of the original vali is what I always liked but to each their own!

I had the original vali and it only ever sounded god paired with my hd 650's all my other cans it just sounded plain worse than my magni/audioquestdragonfly/qdac

Talk to me about the qdac.

What exactly do you wish to know about it?

It's built like a tank, has a fairly large 18w power brick, very powerful, it has built in preset filters to subtlely change the sound dignature, lots of spdif I/o. I have been told it also sounds very close to its £600 big brother the mdac which is basically the same but with balanced outputs.

I've not had any regrets going for a Mayflower O2 DAC/Amp. I've read of the great customer service they provide and I've seen the owner, Tyler, on Youtube a few times he's just an ordinary guy like us who also games a lot like me. Made a hobby into a nice little cottage industry.
