Obliged to give a written statement

You could have written out a statement in the time it took to post this thread.

I mean the initial post has an account of what you saw!

Just repeat it officially! with a signature

Use the Cheney / Rumsfeld / North cop-out of "I have no recollection of the events . . ." - it sounds as if you have the same sense of responsibility as they lacked

A very acidic, unhelpful and indeed misguided piece of advice there stockers.

It doesn't exactly seem as if his evidence would be pivotal now does it ?

It comes down to personal choice at the end of the day and if he doesn't want to give a statement or get involved then why twist to the contrary ?

You do know free and personal choice don't you ? The very same freedoms you often say are stamped on in this police state of ours ?

Depending on the circumstances, I would never fault someone that decided against giving an official statement in a criminal matter...

if you dont want to get involved then don't give the statement...especially if you think there could be repurcussions for you afterwards.
twice ive gave statements to the police after being witness to an incident and both times they went sour...once when i was a school kid and i got told they would not tell who i was unless it went to court....they lied.
once some years ago and again my name got leaked out.
