I know some of the guys here are running quarls texture packs with oblivion.
could i have some feedback please on expected performance hit running this re-texture.

my rig;
X2 4400+ (969) @ 2.66
2 Gig Geil @ 220 medium latencies
Gainward 7800GS+ 512 (7900GT core) @ 600/1400
X-Fi
250Gb samsung spinpoint SATA II
Rez 1280x1024

playing with grass distance 40%. actors/items/trees/view distance 100%
Specular 70%. self shadows/shadows on grass off. tree canopy on low detail. Detail large.
No AA. 8 x AF Hi quality.

Oblivion.ini tweaked

getting 20ish fps outdoors and 30-50+ indoors. game running pretty smooth outdoors cos i've changed pagefile location and got game on faster dedicated hdd.

have just re-installed the game but was running Shajas LOD texture replacement, better tiling and LOD fixes. for same FPS.

Am prepared to tweak sliders a bit more for quarls.

rig scores just under 10K 3dmark05.

Any ideas from experience what fps hit i'll take with Quarls?

and yes, im am saving for an 8800 :D

performance is good, but i do have 4gb ram.

it looks great, but i have noticed the odd texture glitch here and there, plus it tends to be a little unstable.

have you optimised your oblivion.ini to take account of your huuuge amount of RAM?
what gfx card are you running?
i might save a restore point and try it, although i reckon im in for single figure fps unless i dial down some sliders :(
just need to wait for some windfall cash and get an 8800.... or secretly abuse the credit card :D

i find the vanilla texture disgustingly bland. this game'll bankrupt me

Quarls is'nt really a mod. its a re-texture package of the world of cyrodil. the vanila game has texture levels suitable for xbox360 something like 512 x 512. quarls takes it to 4026 x 4026 resolution so you get much finer details.

try this site, it possibly hosts the most mods for oblivion.

try this site for pictures that show what texture mods do

make it pretty

Thanks I have quarls now, but there's just to much to choose from out there, im bewildered.

wouldnt mind some help with this too, I put oblivion aside agers ago. Just reinstalled to make new char since I upgraded.
Is Quarls the highest quality texture pack or is there better? Again I looked but theres so many I have no idea.

Sorry for the hijack, but saves me opening a new thread :p

I was wondering if anyone has the OOO Mod installed, and if so, what are you thoughts to it? I installed it the other day, and im not completley sure its working right. Does it take longer to lvl up? also at what levels do all the new items start to appear?

thanks.

I have just installed quarls patch and it has crippled game performance. :(

Its rubbish on a 8800gtx using vistas crappy drivers anyway.

Takes about 5 times longer to level. items are not levelled. bandits are more likely to be wearing cheaper, rougher banditty stuff etc. if you care to step into some of the marauder caves etc you might be rewarded with better gear but you'll also be dead :D
its designed so a level 1 - 10 player generally runs for his life.... a lot!
however levels are fixed. so if you are cautious, work thru the guilds and quests and slowly level you will overtake most characters.
Oscuro does however make a comment about being at least lvl 20-25 to go into an oblivion gate, even then its hard going.
its a hardcore rpg that rewards hardwork.
you could use OOO lite which enables you to use different plugins for levelling speeds etc amongst other optional OOO content.

i started my first character with OOO. the game was better but being as i was new to oblivion i got impatient. im going to run my current lvl 30 character thru every quest then start again with OOO. a lot of people whine about the broken level system but i've not had any trouble. levelled loot means the money pours in past lvl 20. every bandit is in glass or daedric and the scraps are fun. with good enchanted armour and powerful spells you soon become the main player in the game. i just love it all :D

this is why i have'nt installed it yet

i have to say though vanilla textures are awfull. im tempted to load in shajas LOD texture packs as they are quite good. trouble is uninstalling them is always a pain.
an 8800GTS on XP drivers and Quarls 3 will go on, my credit card is twitching but i must be patient. she's getting a new kitchen and im having a new card..... secretly of course

i was recommended quarls texture pack but im not sure if ill get a big performance knock and be playing at unplayble framerates, my rig:
e6600
2gb ram
x1900xtx
windows xp

Oblivions performance on vista x64 using an 8800gtx and drivers 1065 and 1041, is not very good. On installing this quarls mod, it has made it pretty much unplayable now. Im just waiting for some decent drivers from nvidia, cos my card should be killing it @ 1280x1024.

Im playing fear everything maxed and its very smooth and nice.

They're entirely seperate, the texture pack changes how the game looks, OOO changes how the game plays.
That's what I thought, but if I install the texture pack into the oblivion data folder, won't several of the OOO folders be overwritten, or is this ok?
