Not sure if this should be in games or hardware……..is hardware related though...

My system spec is the following

E6600 overclocked to 3,004 Mhz
BFG 8800 GTX GPU
2 GB Geil ultra low latency RAM PC6400 800

Am really getting into Oblivion, but really expected my rig to handle it better!

Using the following settings – no mods, downloads etc – game at stock.

Am running it at 1920x1200.
Textures large
Aa x4
Bloom lighting
All shadows on
Water reflections on
Water and shadow detail to high
Grass distance about 75%
See far off objects
Specular distance about 75%
All other sliders on about 50%

I’m finding that I can’t just put everything on max and would have thought I would have been able to – is there something wrong with my rig?

At those settings it runs smooth and fast – if for example I turn the grass distance to max though, this slows things down – not unplayable but more makes it a bit stuttery. Does this sound normal?

Want this game to look it’s best. I suppose the 1920x1200 is the problem area?

Any help pls!

Nic

I'm running a similar setup and my Oblivion suffers the same FPS problem. Its just a very demanding game, very high-detailed textures. I have the ultra high textures mod on also and that gives it more punishment.

Try turning AA to x2 or even off and have a look at how it handles.

Thats the problem I don't think there is going to be something that will play it with no issues. Nic's spec is very high, fastest graphics card on the market at the moment, dual core CPU running @ 3GHz and 2GB of DDR2 which is ultra low latency.

The sales pitch on the system link i posted said it would play all the latest games at max without breaking a sweat!?! How can they say that when it can't run oblivion at max?

I'm confused.

Now i'm alittle worried my new system won't be able to run Crysis.

There are a few games out there for which the optimum PC spec doesn't exist. Oblivion is very demanding, though I did get reasonable results on my old P4 2.4Ghz system with 1Gb RAM and a Geforce 6600 Gfx card. Flight Sim X is another where even the high end 8800 owners are complaining you can't max out the detail.

The only answer is to spec the best you can afford and as advised by the Dons and wise Guys on this excellent forum, but be prepared to compromise your settings on the most demanding titles.

Oh and buy a PC which you can esily upgrade, not like the Spackard Hell system I initially made the mistake of buying earlier in the year from aforementioned purple shirted ones.

Thanks guys. Actually I don't mind too much that I can't run it fully specced. Just good to know that it isn't the rig I've built that isn't performing as it should.

This isn't a new problem. There are occasional games which demand more bang than is possible from current hardware setups.

Back some years ago, Falcon 4.0 hit the market. Everyone had the same problem then. It was a bit ahead of its time, it tried to do a tonne of stuff. It was hardly playable on my rig at the time, my next rig (a year or two later) did a better job but you still had to make tradeoffs and tune everything up to make it playable. I think it was the following system I built that actually ran it like it should have been.

should b fine normally but when you outside it hammers the best pcs available silly that a 15 game beats a 2000 quid pc isnt it .

You got pretty much identical spec to me, and I get the odd lag, but overall the FPS is great. But compared to my old X2 4400+ @ 2.6ghz / 7800GTX and Corsair XMS 3200 it runs like a beaut, so I am happy with it.

Its deffo not got anything to do with ya rig... and asmentioned above by mishima I don;t think there will ever be a rig to play it PERFECTLY.

Just be happy with what you got tbh, its better then what some people have :)
