Oblivion bug?

I searched the internet but i cant seem to find the solution. In the quest in the castle where you have to find the count but when you find him he's dead, so you take his ring and take it back to the guard i have the ring but the game isnt recognising that i have it so i cant continue the quest.
Is this a known problem and how can i fix it?
PS: the game is patched to 1.2

not come across that one before, always worked fine with me, but not sure if is was on 1.2 when i did that bit or on the release version.

deffo speaking to the right guard???
