Oblivion crashes on startup... goodbye cruel world.

Okay, well maybe i'm not ready for sepukku quite yet, but I am rather distressed. Oblivion now crashes at startup, right after the Bethesda title screen, when it goes to move onto the next bit it gets a microsoft error report.

Now the thing is, the game was working 100% fine yesterday with exactly the same drivers. I had to do a reformat due to a failed disk backup (was due a reformat anyway) and thought that as such life would be rosey and the games would if anything run even nippier.

This happens even with CPU and GPU at stock, running an X1900XT with the Omega 3.8's. All other games are working fine. Tried removing GPU drivers and re-installing... but no joy.

Any suggestions before my girlfriend becomes a pre-marital widow?

I dunno how to fix it but if it's any consolation. it happened to me as well. I reformatted my computer and now it works but if it happens once who's to say it won't happen again?

****. I really can't be bothered reformatitng again. WHat GPU and drivers were you running, were they the same after the reformat?

Yup, installed 3DMARK'06 so is bang up to date already.

as in february06 DX release? there was also updates in august05 and december05, some folk have had problems fixed by using the february06.

Trying that now my friend!

mine used to do same, found out it was my SB Audigy 2 card. If you have an SB card maybe just try disabling it first. Got mine working in the end by reinstalling ffdshow

ffdshow? Dont have an SB either.

ffdshow is a codec used for movies. usualy the problem shows upon starting a new game (the story into) rather that at the menu.

Tried re-installing that, no joy. Going to try uninstalling oblivion and download and install new cats, If that doesn't work I guess ill have to wait for the patch... grrr...
