I have oblivion on the following system:

E6550 @ 2.33GHz
3GB Geil 667MHz ram
HD3870XT
OCZ stealthxstream 600w psu
Hitachi 320gb hdd
Vista home premium 32 bit

and sometimes when i play oblivion it just decides to crash, it doesn't do it all the time and i don't know why it does, its perfectly fine when im playing it, max settings and smooth frame rate, any ideas what might be causing it?

nope, no mods, my card is running around 35 degrees, havn't got any patches but its a very recent addition that i have, where can i get a patch then?

And in answer to the original question: it just does, right?

That said, Oblivion will find the slightest chink in any overclock, the least problem with memory, etc. So the question is: how often? The maximum the Ob will go without a crash to desktop is probably about six hours, but anything over four is good. If it's locking then that a system problem, not an Oblivion problem. It's CTDing every ten minutes then it's very possibly your rig. At the very least boost the CPU voltage a notch or two.

As stated above, this assumes no mods.

i already have the knights of the nine and shivering isles expansion pack, so none of those patches will help me. it tends to just say 'oblivion has stopped working' and then i have to close it through task manager. it happens probably every third time i play it and normally mid game which is annoying when you hasn't saved something. on my brothers pc it stops working as soon as it is opened so i think its probably a performance problem as his pc isn't as good as mine.

Doesn't really answer my question (which I admit was badly phrased): how long do you have to be playing before this happens? A few minutes? A couple of hours?

its normally and hour or two into it by which time i forget about it and forget to save.

whats your resolution and outdoor framerate?

i'm running at 1680x1050 with all on max, no AA + AF, HDR and i get horrible slowdowns when outside, with my average outdoor framerate at about a measly 20.

oh yeah, rig is a Q6600 @3GHz, 8800GTX, 4GB DDR2-6400 on Windows XP-x64

Save often, and into several locations. It's been a rule with Bethesda games for ages. Holding up for an hour suggests that generally the system is pretty stable - if it wasn't you'd be lucky to see twenty minutes. You are at the point where it's hard to say if the issue is your hardware or the game. Try lowering the graphics settings (and in particular, the various draw distances) and see if this has any effect.

thats very strange,I hit 60fps with everything on high with no mods,
My rig is
amd x2 6000
2 gig ram
xp
geforce 8800GT OC 512MB
view sonic 22"

not all that dissimilar to my rig, i get high frame rates too, don't know the exact amount but is very playable with everything high, and views far.
