I have a stuttering / low FPS problem with Oblivion GotY edition.
My Rig:
E8400 dual core @ 3.0Ghz
BFG GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB
2GB Geil memory

I've looked at tweak guides, I have no mods installed, the latest drivers installed and I cannot find any patches for GotY edition so I assume that is up-to-date. It's not like I've got all the settings on high either:

17" monitor, 1280 x 1024

Anti-aliasing: Off
VSync: Off
Screen Effects: HDR
Distant Landscape: On
Distant Buildings: On
Distant Trees: On
Texture Size: Medium
Tree Fade: 75%
Actor Fade: 75%
Item Fade: 75%
Object Fade: 75%
Grass Distance: 60%
View Distance: 100%
Int. Shadows: Off
Ext. Shadows: Off
Self Shadows: On
Shadows on grass: Off
Tree Canopy Shadows: Off
Shadow Filtering: Off
Water Detail: Normal
Water Reflection: On
Water Ripples: On
Window Reflections: Off
Blood Decals: High

Problems are pretty much constant, they don't really occur at a particular time or anything. It's a bit stange as Crysis ran perfect with almost all settings on high yet Oblivion struggles...

Any help much appreciated :)

What fps are you getting?

I used to run it at that res maxed out with a lower spec system (old GTS with an E6400 at stock) and it ran fine, just stuttered occasionalyl when walking around out side mainly in areas with lots of trees and stuff.

Really? Never knew that...:(

He's right - Oblivion kills hardware, even now. Start by turning off self shadows. Turn on the fps counter (open the console with ¬, then type tdt + <enter>. Use the scroll lock key to cycle through the various versions of the debug options until you have only the fps count) - what sort of figures are we talking? Forests with lots of animals will be worst, and I'd expect to see about 35fps there with those settings - maybe as low as 25fps. Indoors you should be more like 75+.

You might want to experiment with bloom rather than HDR just to see what it does for frame rates. And make sure FSAA is turned off in the drivers as well as in the game - it's possible to have it running that way even if the game thinks it's off.

It actually looks like I'm getting pretty good FPS using those settings. 50-70 in forests, 70-100 in houses. The only problem is the occasional stuttering which causes random FPS drops. As some of you have mentioned maybe that can't be helped without mods, etc.

Stuttering and low fps are two seperate issues with Oblivion. On any PC it stutters in outdoor areas as you travel round, it's due to loading new areas and objects and it's very annoying. You shouldn't be getting low fps on a GTS though at the resolution you're using, it should be flying with everything on full.

Its pretty common for oblivion to stutter a bit when wandering around outside, no matter what hardware you have

I had a problem when riding a horse around it would stutter terribly. What I found fixed it was turning on "3d Sound" in my sound control panel in windows so if you have an integrated sound card try this.
