Not sure if this should be in games or hardware……..

My system spec is the following

E6600 overclocked to 3,004 Mhz
BFG 8800 GTX GPU
2 GB Geil ultra low latency RAM PC6400 800

Am really getting into Oblivion, but really expected my rig to handle it better!

Using the following settings – no mods, downloads etc – game at stock.

Am running it at 1920x1200.
Textures large
Aa x4
Bloom lighting
All shadows on
Water reflections on
Water and shadow detail to high
Grass distance about 75%
See far off objects
Specular distance about 75%
All other sliders on about 50%

I’m finding that I can’t just put everything on max and would have thought I would have been able to – is there something wrong with my rig?

At those settings it runs smooth and fast – if for example I turn the grass distance to max though, this slows things down – not unplayable but more makes it a bit stuttery. Does this sound normal?

Want this game to look it’s best. I suppose the 1920x1200 is the problem area?

That game seems to be killer on hardware, don't think it will run maxed out smoothly on hardware for quite a while

try reducing the resolution, don't know many people who play games at 1600x* or 1920x*
 
turn down AA to 2x at that res you don't need tons anyway.
turn off shadows on grass and self shadows
set shadow filtering to low

read this - Tweakguide

and follow his guidance and customise your configs.
you should get a very nice looking game after.
be aware stutter is'nt low famerates, its loading cells from hdd to memory as you move about. stutter gets worse the faster you move but the above guide will help you. i don't know what your hdd set up is but by putting Oblivion onto a seperate fast SATAII disk you'll suffer less stutter. fixing the pagefile size and moving it to another fast disk also helps. like i said read tweakguide and apply.

if you want Oblivion to look prettier get modding. the LOD and texture mods etc added with Natural Enviroments make for a stunning game.

see my Oblivion post for a list of links/mods/banter/screenies etc. right at the end i've listed my specs (post 111). look at your own screenies and compare.
a finely tuned Oblivion + mods can look amazing even with many sliders down.

Yep... if you're prepared to fiddle and tweak for a few days, you might just get this game looking the way the developers should have made it!
 
what you mean 1/2 an hour?
of course if you'd rather just expect it to play perfectly out of the box without configuring it to your individual pc set up, you could always play it on xbox360 or ps3........
 
drop the res if you can (get another 8800 GTX n SLI em if you cant : D ) and grab some texture packs. Its realy going to depend on your monitor.
 
If you want to be running 1920x1200 4xAA with max settings then you need another GTX I'm afraid :) It's a very demanding game.

That said, why not settle for sensible settings as it will still look OK and run decent.
 
Get Qarls Texture Pack 3 in there too -looks stunning & the performance is no worse than without it imo. As said above, any stuttering is mainly down to hdd activity.

I'm running it at 1024 x 768, 4 x aa, 8 x af with most sliders on medium/high & averaging 40 - 60fps which is more than playable. It looks pretty damn fine too :D

Essentially the game is poorly coded & could have performed so much better if it had been done properly. Spend some time tweaking & it will look nice & play pretty well.
 
I can run it "smoothly" (i.e 30-40fps out in the wilderness) on my E6300 and x1950XTX with a mere 1gb of RAM.

However, no matter how smoothly you can get the actual FPS, you can never get rid of the "stuttering" when travelling around in the countryside, caused by the game loading areas.

The best thing you can do to combat that is defrag after installing the game, and visit here http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_1.html and follow the tweaking guide. Helps a lot with FPS and smoothness.

This game just basically used the wrong engine. No occlusion culling either. It was the same with Morrowind. Took a good few years before I could run it at what I'd call smooth....it's just a fairly inappropriate, 5 year old engine. Bethesda have a history of using obsolete engines for their games.

What's with the eye-rolling? Look at the resources it takes to make that game look "beautiful" and run acceptably. A proprietary engine could have run graphics much more smoothly using far inferior hardware.
