I'm currently at level 12 and looking for a good bow to use in the game. The best one i've heard of is the Hatreds Soul bow which you get through an oblivion gate. I've been looking for it for the last 2 hours using a walkthrough and cant for the life of me find it. I'm entering the oblivion gate south of Chorrol and i'm supposed to find a tower that's sinking in lava, but each time i go into the gate it's completely different  , as in the landscape's changed, the number of towers will change etc! Anyone know where I can find it?

If not does anyone have any recommendations for a good bow? I'm currently using the Shadowhunt (i thnk) bow. Ta

The non-main Oblivion gates are randomised, I think?

The Shrine of Boethia Daedric quest is awesome for archers, although you can't do it til level 20. Definitely do it as soon as you can though, there's a LOT of great arrows that get dropped by enemies in that quest.

I always used Shadowhunt, I never found much better than that, but I'm not much of an archer so I didn't look very hard.

I can't suggest a great bow, but i can confirm that the non main-quest daedra gates are randomised, any equipment can be found in any of them. There is a hatred's soul bow, but i don't have a clue how to get it, possibly on of the downloadable content rewards? maybe knights of the nine?

Are bows any good then? I haven't played an archer yet. I always wondered what you did against creatures which needed magic, ghosts and such?

Bows are rubbish tbh. I only ever use them for the first hit. Biffing someone with a bow while they can't see you and you're in sneak gets you a damage multiplier, then they run at me and I bash them in with something a bit more... useful.

Apparently Hatred's Soul is in the Chorrol gate, but if you want to get it randomly just quicksave before entering a non-main gate, and keep going in until it's the right Oblivion environment. There's only a certain amount of them, you should get the right one sooner or later :D

Join the dark brotherhood and make sure you do the contracts qualifying for the special bonus, for one of them you get a damn nice bow

Bows are definately a lot weaker than a magic or melee character, i really only use them for the odd stealth attack before going into combat. There are a couple of mods that try to bring bow combat in line with the other two.

plus its only 12 quid in the sale at the moment in a few online stores. (I don't know if they're a competitor but i'll stay on the safe side.)

As a couple of people have suggested, if the oblivion world inside the gate is changing each time you enter it suggests that you have the wrong gate. Most of the cities have at least one random gate that opens nearby (Chorrol actually has at least two) as well as the one you need. Have you spoke to the Countess about allies? If so, then the game will mark the right gate.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

To Joeyjojo: I havn't come accross any creatures that require magic, only ghosts but for them I use silver arrows.

To Mohinder: If you're good enough at sneaking then they wont see you and run at you :p

To Vairo: I'm pretty sure i'm addicted and i think its the best game i've ever played.

To Meridian Thanks for clearing that up, I shall visit the Countess at once!

Bows are extremely good if you have 100 sneak and 100 agility. 3x attack bonus, 100 sneak takes away the armour rating of the enemy and 100 agility gives uber damage.

Takes a hell of a lot of stat training though and you will probably get bored doing it but it's worth it :D.

I have 100 agility and 115 sneak :p
Didn't take too long because I'm a Khajit born under the sign of the thief so those stats are fairly high anyway, and I hardly ever walk, i just sneak everywhere. As for the agility, everytime I leveled-up the agility attribute had x3/x4/x5 multiplier next to it :) .

im not 100% sure on this - relatively new to the game myself, and only lvl 5/6 iirc, but i've already replaced shadowhunt :P (i think ^^). Additionally, im unsure if this is random loot, and im using ooo 1.31, so :\

SPOILER:

When killing the members of the DB 'cheydinhar' faction (no clue how to spell / pronounce it :P) for the 'purification' quest, pick up their chest keys.

in one chest is a bow which is an upgrade to shadowhunt, and also some arrows worth approx. 3k each ('dragon's teeth' perhaps? :S). bow was 'ebony' something or other.

also some nice blades etc in the chests.

note: i had problems with this and a few other quests, whether due to using ooo, or just being bug's im unsure. I'm usually cautious to never use the console in any PC games - i personally consider it cheating, but, after obtaining the key's to their chests, i still got the 'that lock is too hard' message (can't remember the exact wording), and i also got this on the Theives guild mission to steal something from a countess' jewel box. (pickpocketed the key from her in the day, went to use it at night, and got the message 'you need a key...').

On both occassions i had to use a console command to undo the locks (something along the lines of set MinLapLock 0 - google it :P)

Re: the strength of bows/arrows - yes they do seem slightly underpowered, but i have done fine barely using a sword so far.

I'm unsure if it's because my blade skill isn't high enough, or the fact i have such low armour that mellee combat pwns me, but in general, with all 'tough' fights, i go for the sneak damage multiplier on the initial hit, and then just shoot whilst kiting my opponents. Admittedly, until i got a semi-decent bow, there were times i'd use upwards of 40 arrows on an opponent >_>

generally though, my acrobatic/agility tends to be high enough for me to stay out of mellee range of anyone, providing i have a little space.

maybe its because i played a frost mage in wow for about a year :D

to the op. you'll find vanilla oblivion weapons and armour levelled to your character. hence you're doomed to fairly crap stuff until you level up.
i found this irratating and one fix was to download the "arena combatants loot" mod. now when i kill combatants in the arena i can loot their decent gear which previously was against arena rules :(
despite obtaining a nice elven bow i still found the damage was rubbish.
i thought having to fire 15 arrows into someone was ridiculous. also how can a bow sneak attack possibly give an arrow more damage?
to combat this i installed the "quad damage & faster arrows" mod.
now when i hit someone unarmoured they go down. fully armoured foe take 3 or 4.
using a bow is now a joy which is how it should have been.
you could always try Obscuros Oblivion Overhaul mod which negates leveled loot and weapons. if you can kill a daedric warrior at level 1 his gear is yours....
of course that means as a fresh blinking starter you feel like a baby rabbit in the wilderness. for that reason i don't play OOO yet. i'll enable it when i get to l10 or so.

im finding that despite oblivion being the most compelling awesome game i've ever played, the levelling system and combat etc are at best clumsy.
if hit boxes and combat like dark messiah were incorpared it would be perfect.

still get yerself to the oblivion mod wiki;
