Oblivion came out in 2006 5 years later my current pc still cannot max this game out at constant 60fps.

If i turn off distant trees and buildings and drop the indoor and outdoor shadows and turn off self shadows framerate stays closer to 60fps. If i have max settings looking at certain points of the game can drop my framerate to as low as 28fps. I have a core i7 at 3.2 and a geforce 470. Surely my game shouldnt struggle now. Maybe its the games horrible engine.

Fallout 3 is more improved for me though. The issue is their but no were near as bad.

I am not running any mods either.

I've just recently installed this on my new rig (see sig) and I have no problems. I have everything on max, yet it still looks quite bland though. Maybe I do need a mod.

Playing on the rig in sig at 2048x1156, probably not on max, but get over 60fps. Still looks great for a 2006 game though.

I have had issues with this game for a long time. Even with my older 4870x2 it didnt get stable fps. Maybe something else in my rig is faulty. xbling you have an a SSD. I know that with oblivion and fallout 3 an SSD goes along way to fixing a lot of stuttering and fps issues.

Even though the oblivion/fallout 3 engine is very very playable, its still isn't bug free right? So even if you have a amazing rig, you still would get random fps drops etc like the OP has explained? I get the same problem in all sorts of games, not every game, and have always put it down to being a hi-cup in the code or something specially with a big sandbox game like oblivion/fallout 3.

I've been running this game on full HD and modded on 3-4 year old tech maxed out - no probs.

You might need to check what services you're running in the background.

Well according to what i have been reading the game does not stay at 60fps no matter what. At certain points the framerate randomly drops and its just down to the engine and the game poorly optimised.

well, my laptop can max it out with no mods. But on my main PC with a 5850 i occasionally struggle(just a little bit) with all of the texture/weather mods.

From what i remember (not played it in about 18 months) Oblivion is a game which REALLY hates background processes, i remember having to turn quite a few off.

Alos, download the Unofficial Oblivion patch, it's a mod which fixes loads of bugs
