Morning guys, bought the fantastic Oblivion last week, and have been playing it over the weekend, mostly exploring a town after seeing some wierd monk bloke. The thing is, is that I don't have much gold, and I am struggling trying to find/make any money, I have already spent time in Jail for riffling through some guys house (made the mistake of fighting the Guard :D)

So, how do you make money,

and any tips for beginners on this great game :D

:)

Go looting! There are loads of caves and ruined forts and things where you can go treasure hunting and nicking the belongings/armour off people you kill. Then you can flog it all back for profit in the Imperial City Market district.

Well I found a money exploit in the game when I played it. I did a specific job for the Count of Skingrad (I think) and he pays you for it. If you keep initiating a conversation with him the option to 'collect reward' still appears meaning you can fleece him for hundreds of thousands. I got about 400k which lasted me till the end of the game, lol.

If this has been fixed in a patch (I've not played for a long time) then I can't help you as I didn't really discover any other way of making money other than doing the Guild and Arena Quests.

This is pretty much the best way to make money early on in the game, there are more than enough caves around with gold in them. Fighting in the arena is also a good place to make some money, the fights are all fairly easy until the last few.

A lot of the side quests come with a reward in gold so do a few of them as well.

There is a money glitch in Oblivion, but I wouldn't recommend using it, certainly not straight away. Would spoil the game to use it from the start imo.

Toddle around the land pwning bandits and do the aformentioned looting :) You should find some decent items and your cash will fill up before long. If you join the thieves guild before doing this then it means you'll be able to sell your loot to your fence (someone who'll buy and sell stolen goods) so you'll be able to progress along the thieves guild missions at the same time.

That's another thing, I am in Chorrol, and when trying I go into the fighters guild, i am told to see someone, but I can only find a relative...

The fighters guild missions are given out by the head of each branch in each place. They don't all have jobs at the same time. You may go to the leader of the fighters guild in Leyawin for example, but he may not have a mission for you. If he doesn't, he will usually say see x at bruma, cheydinhal, anvil etc etc.

The structure is similar in the mages guild at first, you have to do a mission for each head before you can advance.

This should answer most questions you have.

I didn't cheat and I used the exploit I found I used because I felt it was a reward for finding it. I would say the exploit actually improved the game for me.

I don't generally cheat at these sort's of games, it does spoil it for me..

Looks like I am going ruin hunting tonight :), maybe do some dear hunting while I am out as well :) Someone in the town said that they bought dear skins.... :)

Dear Skins?

I hope you mean Deer Skins...... can't go around topping old dears you know.

There's a good way of making a fair amount of money, I'm talking 10k +

It's a quest. To activate it you need to find an Ayleid Statue in one of the Ayleid Ruins.

Sell it in a shop in imperial City, And then leave the shop. Wait around for a while and you'll get a man approach you.

I'll not go any further into it than that. As I don't want to spoil too much.

It's long winded! But worth it for the cash and the adventure. :D

Im an expert on cheating in oblivion :p .... 220hours in and i still had loads to do..

This one was the best.

If you want the make money legitimately then the best way I found was to join the thieves guild and find the skeleton key (cant remember where i picked it up). This means you can just walk into every door you like and nick whatever you like. Find a rich house then sell the stolen stuff to your fence.

Join the thieves guild, then burgle shops and houses, its easy, just avoid the sleeping quarters. The skeleton key is from an Ayelid quest and a bit advanced, just start off with easy doors. Lockpicks can be purchased from fences, the more you pick the higher your lockpick skill, do locks manually and watch the rythm of the tumblers you'll easily pick it up. Also be nice to shopkeepers etc improve your speechcraft and prices come down. One of the best ways to get legit stuff to sell is to keep checking the barrels etc round the imperial market district because there is usually something you can sell in one or two of them.

if you steal foodstuffs or ingredients and then craft them by alchemy they lose their 'stolen' mark so you can sell them.

As you level up money becomes far, far easier to come by, the loot in dungeons gets a ton better. Highwaymen and bandits sooner or later start wearing elven and orcish and so on armour, which sells for top dollar.

Join the mages or fighters guild and then you can just wander round inside there building picking up anything that isn't marked as red and you can even flog it back to their own armourer.
