Somewhere in the middle.
I upgraded my PC recently and it runs games pretty fantastically now, so the first thing i bought was oblivion to test it out.

Ramped up the graphics and its stunning, but im really struggling to get into it. I seem to just end up killing random people, resisting arrest, and screwing up what few quests i seem to get.

Is it a bit slow to start with?, i guess maybe im just too impatient.

Can anyone give me some pointers on best way to start.

Used quick travel.

I was killing loads of people and some hooded guy got me in this place doing contracts for killings. But i used all my lockpicks and cant get into the house of my next target lol

where is best place for lockpicks?

Join the theives guild by talking to some guy at the riverside place.
Once you've joined, he'll sell them to you for 5 each.
As you can tell i havnt played in a while :D

You can get the Skeleton Key for completing a shine quest (can't remember which). This is basically an invincible lock pick.

Im gonna have to start over i think. I butchered everyone everywhere i went. Its a shame the start sequence before getting out of the sewer takes so damn long

you need to be level 10 to do that quest.

start by doing the main quest, once you get to cloud ruler temple, join the blades, and then go to the armory, you can then get the blades armor, the stuff the guys at the start wear, and a katana and a die katana...pretty sweet gear at level 1, gets you started

If you complete the side quests before the main quest you'll be weak and all the rewards will be worthless. Either do the main quest or get your level up some other way.

Why would you do that :/

I accidently whacked someone, and then they chased me, so i killed em.

Then someone spoke to me with a dodgy tone, so i froze his ass too.

And i didnt like doing jail time so i just killed everyone who chased me lol

I like Oblivions "do what you like" quest feature, it's not linear, you can join each guild, and do each quest in any order. As you meet to and talk to new people you might find out about a new quest. It's a bit like Ultima 7.

^^^ That is so funny. I haven't laughed out loud for ages.

Firstly... ha ha, thats funny as hell. Like you'm i'm just starting myself, i've done soem good deeds and some bad. 2 murders apparantly, though don't remember doing them (dunno if i should be worried). I've started what seems to have been a bit of an epic quest already. ended up finding an heir to the thrown, took him to a priest, helped a knight win back a city from an oblivion gate, and then gained the trust of the nice knights mentioned above at the ruler temple thing.

Got a bit bored of being a hero in that sense the other night so went to the arena and worked my way up to gladiator status... got me some money :D. I loved the gladiator bit, has a very authentic feel to it and feels great when you win a match.

I might actually play a bit more of the main quest tonight, cary on with being a thief ;)

Definately do the main quest for a bit till you get the pimped armour and sword. Then have a play for a bit, as you seem to need to be a bit cooler before a statue will talk to you... ******* statue, up its own arse i say!

to the OP: mate keep playing, i felt exactly the same as u and kept putting the game down for ages, i actually carried on further a few weeks ago and i regret not playing it thru the first time....defo an amazing game

Even though everyone keeps ranting and raving about this game, it bored me to s... you know what.
I live the idea, the screenshots... and pretty much everything about it, but when it came to actually playing it, I thought it was PANTS :(

I loved the graphics of this game, the combat is pretty good, but I could never really get into it. The world is just... stale. I never connected to or liked any of the NPCs in the game and the quests were just yawnable. Never really understood why its raved about so much.

Oblivion will be remembered as the first proper RPG that attempted to combine sm3, clever A.I, pc shattering graphics, voice acting and a great world to the masses before their hardware was ready for it.
This game has set the bar that all other RPG's have to beat if they want to be great.
It will be a while before it's bettered and in the meantime the huge community provide enough mods to stop you ever having completed everything.
Its achieved it's purpose of allowing the player to forget about the real life and sink into the world of Tamriel.
For these reasons I love it.
I also know its a cantakerous beast and requires time and understanding to get to know how to play it and how to make it bug free.

Did you know you can escape from jail? when you are put in jail you have 1 lockpick on you and have the task of Openeing a Very hard Lock, if u manage that, then you have the task of sneaking past the guards and also if you want and you should go to a chest near your Jail Cell called 'Evidence' this is everything you owned and was wearing before being put in Prison.
If you manage to escape, your Bounty will increase, and Guards will constantly be after you, lol.
Its kinda fun though, and you benefit by getting Increased Security skill.
So much fun to be had in the game and so much to see, i wish i was starting the game new and didnt know what to expect from the Quests etc, that game constantly amazed me, just give it time mate :) trust me, it takes a lil while to get into :)
