Oblivion - n00b overwhelmed!

firstly let me apologize. i have looked at the many oblivion threads but they only increase my ignorance!

im new to this RPG genre (bf2/2142 shootah ****!) and am currently playing and loving Dark Messiah. i've bought Oblivion and plan to install after xmas.

so, because my gaming time is constrained by family i want to play it from the start with the most satisfaction.

firstly order of install. i assume it to be - game - patch - up to date mods.
if i buy the knights.o.t.9 ex pack is this affected by the mods? does it just sit on top of the game adding new levels with exsisting mods?

secondly mods - i've checked em out and there are tons! im happy with the more basic graphical enhancing mods but need a n00b guide to the bigger ones.
i think my gaming criteria requires a fairer levelling system. ie i don't want everyone to be the same level. i want to enjoy level powers earnt and not have to face the lowliest guard with the same strength if you get my drift.

a list of the the essential gfx and levelling mods to make the game great from the start would be splendiferous :)

lastly a hdd question. im still running EIDE discs. my xp/gaming drive is a 133/80gb job thats quite full and my data disc is a slower 100/120gb disc. i'd like to stick the game and its compendium of mods onto the bigger disc but don't know how the game loads. does it load levels to ram or is it constantly loading and thrashing the pagefile?
i can live with longer load times but not stutter.

my system spex are ; X2 4400+ @ 2.5 - gainward bliss 7800GS+/512 @ 600/1400 (thats the agp 7900gt/512) - 2 gig Ram - X-Fi - 1280 x 1024 res.

any help most gratefully accepted.

I know how you feel.

Im playing through the game vanilla. Totally confused but starting to work it out.

Ive played about 20 hours, if I added that leveling mod thing would it affect my save game, dont want to start again.

At first, I would play through with only minor mods, the ones I'd reccommed is the colour map mod, and the BTmod for the menus.

I'd leave it at that at first. BTmod is ESSENTIAL though! The stock menu is rubbish.

I'm going to start a new game with the OOO mod soon :D

i was going to try the tutorial on vanilla then mod up accordingly.
have been reading about the OOO mod which looks good. i was hoping an all encompassing mod such as OOO would be better than the host of smaller "fix it" or "enhance it" etc mods.

you must get

LOD FIX mod , looks crap without it
Darker mod pack , its awsome
natural enviorments , weather/water etc with hdr

they are required to make game enjoyable imo, all work with OOO1.31

Stormier Storms (I think) is a good one to have also. When you're in the middle of a storm you'll really feel it.

Apart from visual improvement mods I wouldn't suggest getting gameplay change mods first time. It could make the game more confusing for you.
