Oblivion on the 360, how does it handle?

At the moment I am playing Oblivion on my PC, but have to admit to considering buying it for the 360. One thing which is putting me off though is the control method, I love using 1 - 9 for spells and weapons... I have heard you must use the Dpad on the 360, which sounds a little awkward?

I personally don't mind the d-pad at all for this game, it's a good control method, however, the D-pad is the worst part of the Xbox360 controller.

Being an old EQ player I wondered how well an RPG like this would work on the 360.
The answer is - Pretty well !

It is not as immediate as having a keyboard for selection but it is definitely not enough of a hassle to put you off either. Plus you always have something inyour hand to chuck at the TV.

Most people don't have a target quite as big as yours though, they'll probably hit a picture on the wall.

Hehe. True. Not actually launched the controller at anything yet. So far ...

In truth i find Oblivion much easier to play on the 360 than i do on the PC. Im forever forgetting which keys do what on the PC version, just check the threads in the PC gaming forum with people asking such simple questions as how do you drop things. The controller in Oblivion becomes almost like second nature and it really is very easy to use. I havent tried to see if my PC 360 controller will work in the PC version of Oblivion as i'd probably use that in preference to the mouse/keyboard. Its not because i dont like using mouse/keyboard either as i much prefer that control method in FPS.

I don't use the D-Pad that much, but had it assigned to around 5 spells. It works pretty well tbh, and control wise the whole game is quite easy and quick to adapt to.

How does the dpad work then?

Can you only assign things on up,down, left and right? or can you have the diagnols to?

So for example up+left or down+right?

After playing PCs version for awhile and then buying 360's I was a bit turned off by the LONG load times in between villages & the world map etc. but other than that it runs pretty decent...

Its spelt diagonals, I mis-typed in my previous post :(

I find the diagonals too hard to hit when all 8 directions have spells allocated, always selects the above below one :( up,down, left and right are no probs but as I said before im probably too heavy handed, lol

BTW what spec pc are you running oblivion on?

Yeah these are the biggest pitfalls of the 360 version. :(

Venice @ 2.8GHZ, 1GB ram, X800XT @ 540/540.

I am thinking the 360 version would probablly run better, but then I will miss out on the PC mods that are already starting to filter out.

This is the reason I bought the 360, I was running similar specs and it grinds the 360 runs it perfectly. I understand there are mods out there which can be added via the members market but they're more expensive.

For me it was pay £1000 to upgrade the PC or £300 for an other unit which I can use to stream media and pick up and play, needless to say the 360 won :)

Yeah its a hard one to call, I have 3700sd, 6800's sli, 2gig ram and find It plays smoothness/fps wise the same as the 360 version but looks a lot sharper defined and has more detail. it seems a little smoother on the 360 because the cursor movement is slowed down a lot to give you a playable fps speed, If you was to move your mouse the same speed as the cursor moves on the 360 then it would be as smooth on the pc also, but whos gonna play with a keyboard mouse as slow as that? The loading times on my PC are much faster (as mentioned before). In fact everything I said points to the pc version on my system being better but for some reason I much prefer the 360 version and have hardly touched the PC one  ...

Very good point, a top GPU will cost you more than a 360 and youll still probably need to upgrade something else, then add to that the top gpu's are still struggling to run at anything over 30fps,, BTW if I run HDR as the 360 impliments then Im down to 10 fps in places
