Thats not the kind of stutter i'm talking about. I have almost no "loading textures" stutter at all.

The stutter i'm talking about is there all the time.. Like frame skiping. Just take a look at my videos.

Games like Oblivion and Far Cry are notorious to have problems with joysticks or other USB devices. These can cause precisely the frame frame frame <skip> frame frame frame <skip> issues. I've solved all sorts of issues with these two games skipping/pausing every 1-2 seconds by simply removing all joysticks and USB devices and running a stock PS2 keyboard and PS2 mouse. It's then smooth as butter- once again assuming the 60hz/vsync tests have been performed.

In oblivion im getting frame skips every second frame it makes the game run overally good apart from the damn frame skpping. Makes me feel sick after a while.

If i set ifpsclamp or whatever to 60 the frame skipping is gone but then anytime the frame rates drop to 40 or below it goes into slow mo mode, every thing slows down to a complete crawl regardless of frame rates.

Why the bloody hell is this game doing it

Quake 4 and doom3 also do it
This type of stuttering isnt classed as normal hdd activity stuttering

i just installed quake 4 tonight and its doing it for me
i selected the ultra setting and on the intro with bodys going past there is this little stutter, thats annoying as hell and i cant figure out how to get rid of it
even though the game is smooth the intro vid isnt.
these arent normal stutters they always happen about 2 seconds apart at all times and never vanish thoughout the quake 4 intro...

with a specd system like mine i would expect smoothness in this game
but what the hell i dont, BTW guys dont expect ATI to fix this.

In Quake 4 (or Doom 3) open the console and enter com_precisetic 0 and set the refreshrate to 60Hz/v-sync on. I had the exact same rhythmical stutters/micropauses with the Doom 3 engine when precisetic was set to 1 (default), as if 1 or 2 frames every 30 frames or so were missing, regardless of the ingame fps.

Anyone know what causes this? and why its only doing it in certain games
its not related to dual core because it did it on single core , it isnt overclock related nor is it related to crt or lcd. Also not related to hard drive loading

Took my mouse out , and disabled HID compliant device controller...

Just ps2 keyboard left in

Still did it

For example

Scroll left or right ( skip skip skip skip skip skip )
Walk forward ( smooth skip smooth skip smooth skip )

Its a problem with overclocked graphics cards (I'm looking at you - 7900GT/GTX!), the vertex shaders are overclocked by too much so they start pausing, causing stutters or even multi-second pauses. Underclock the GPU (even if its below 'stock') to NV's original clocks before XFX/BFG/etc. overclocked it. If that fixes it - you can get it replaced by the manufacturer.

May also affect ATI, but without so much press about them (ie. 7900 series :p) no one has investigated. Try underclocking the GPU to see if it fixes it. You have nothing to lose.

I get the same skipping effect on the Quake 4 intro. It's very minor but very noticable, It happens in a lot of things to be honest but I put it down to a framerate vs refresh rate issue. The screen is flickering on and off as it updates (albeit very quickly) I presumed this causes an "invisible frame" to be rendered causing a skipping effect.

This is all total made up BS guesswork though...it's an annoyance though

Does seem to be the case though , and i cant find a cure... imagine the quake 4 intro effect but with oblivion/quake4/doom3 all the time during gaming.. Thats how annoying it is.

Downclocked the card and it still does it.
