On the main quest in the shrine of dagon in the mountains. I cannot complete it because my machine blackscreens and restarts.

Late last night I confirmed that the crash happens only on that one main quest in the Dagon shrine. It appears to be related to when the mystic dawn plebs change from robed warriors to mace wielding maniacs. Every time I slay them with my dai katana it crashes.

To confirm this I went back to an older save and went championing in the arena for ages, then went on another mini-quest to root out an unfriendly shopkeeper.....

Not one problem at all......

It must be game related coz I updated all drivers, BIOS, defragged, underclocked etc etc and it still did it only in that mission.

I guess I side quest until a patch is released......

So....time to get in a guild and rise to the top....

What a shame......

Anyone else get a reproducible crash like this?

Not really a reproducible one here but everytine I get to the top few levels of an Oblivion tower I start crashing very frequently, I've tried the same things as you with no sucess, I just save every 30 seconds and cross my fingers  Usually get through it though!

Oblivion should be the new CPU stability test. My PC was running all other games fine and ran Prime 95 with no problems.
On installing Oblivion, the thing would reboot occasionally and in the end I had to up the vcore on my CPU.
Now it runs fine, if not a little warmer. :)

have you tried reinstalling the game? it could just be a file that's corrupted in install.

I have re-installed it of a manor. Installed over the last installation. The damn installer crashes as it tries to run the inbuilt DXSetup and never exits cleanly. Therefore if I try to uninstall it fails and I have to run the setup.exe again. But then that crashes at DXsetup.exe.....rinse/repeat!

I'm currently running at stock everything....boo.

I wouldn't have thought I'd need more volts at stock would I?

Not if you are running from stock you shouldn't.

Having said that, Oblivion really gives the CPU a workout, so it might be worth a try just in case your CPU is undervolting slightly, but its a bit of a long shot.

Have you been on the official elderscrolls forum, they have fixes for countless problems people are having, and if its a game fault, it should be there. If its not there, then its certainly something iffy about your pc :(

I've had zero crashes on my PC, despite a fairly hefty overclock on my CPU and graphics. However, my wife's PC, which is at stock speeds and is otherwise 100% stable, resets quite often while playing Oblivion. Go figure

Its only ever happened in this game. BF2, HL2, PES5 COD 2 etc etc all work fine!

everytime i quit the game i get an error, dosnt effect anything but its a little irritating, had a few random crashes since i got it yesterday morning, but nothing that i'd say is really reproducable.

IF your machine reboots with out an error or BSOD then goto the control panel open ssystem goto the advanced tab and the go into the startup and recovery settings, amke sure that in system failure the automatically restart option is un ticked.

Also agqain in the advanced tab of system goto the settings for performance and then into the data execution prevention and make sure any unstable apps are enabled in the exceptions list.

I have found this solves loads of windows issues, rarely does my machine reboot on its own.
