Oblivion stealing from shops question

Is there some stuff you can buy in the shops...but you can't steal from the shop? I was looking for some good armour, and there was this amazing stuff I could have bought for 11000...i tried to find it so i could steal it but i couldn't find it anywhere. So i thought maybe the guy had it on - so i went to kill him when he was asleep but he'd taken the armour off but I couldn't find it anywhere in the shop or his room?

Can't steal without mods: the boxes containing the stuff for sale are outside the boundaries of the shop - if you open the cell in the editor you will spot the boxes, below the floor usually. The jewellery shop in the city isn't too bad though. Otherwise you need to raid houses. One of the official Thieves quests sends you to a room where there is a leveled magic weapon in a drawer, which can be valuable.

Ah ok, thanks....

I don't have any mods installed - was going to try and complete the game first time round without any.

thats how i was doing it, but decided to install a few minor mods...like the shop keepers having a bit more cash, being able to buy lockpicks, stealth made a bit easier, so that people didnt find you instantly, think that was about it actually they do only change things slightly, but for the better IMO without ruining the game
