Right, absolutely fallen head over heels with this Elder Scrolls stuff, have spent far far too long on it now but enjoyed every second.

Cancelled my order for Blazing Angels last week and was wondering if you thought if FF XII was a good option to go for.

Last FF game I player was 7. It was 'ok', only thing I didn't 'get' was this "Hit Point", "Rama", "Block Bonus" and all that funny malarky.

Is it going to be similar to Oblivion or is it a totally different experience?

Much different to Elder scrolls, I've been playing the JAP version of FFXII now for about a week.

The combat is pretty much completely different, you select actions for your main character to perform. I.E. Spells, fight, guard or special attacks. You other characters in your party are computer controlled, the system they use in FFXII is called Gambits, which means you select what kind of class you want that character to be controlled as. I.E. Fighter, mage or healer there are a few other aswell.

Storyline is presented with in game cutscenes and CGI, it starts of quite slow but, but within the first hour it picks up.

Atm I'm absolutely loving it, but at the same time I'm loving ESIV. Although they are both RPG's their 2 completely different ways of approaching the genre.

Utterly, completely different, I would have thought.

I mean, they come from completely different backgrounds, and thus are very different games. Oblivion is descended from the western PC RPG world, that of medievil fantasy, character classes and control, dynamic exploration, and an absorbing world. The Final Fantasy series are pure Japanese console RPGs. Strong plot, defined characters, a more linear direction of play, etc. Obviously these day there will be some similarity, as most good games will influence each other in some way, but the two games are probably about as similar as Gran Turismo and Burnout, or Oblivion and HL2.

I'm totally new to this rpg stuff, the only one ive played is KOTOR on the pc, does Oblivion or FF play similar to this?

I was stood in tesco for a while yesterday trying to decide whether to buy it or not.

If you thought FFVII was only "ok" then definitely don't go for FFXII! Final Fantasy 7 was a masterclass in gaming. Stick with Oblivion for a while and use that money on FarCry/Tomb Raider instead.

I'd say Oblivion is a perfect mix of both. You should definitely get it, it's awesome.

Oblivion = Perfect medievil/dungeons and dragons role play, excellent game, the pinnacle of western RPG's

FF = Melding of sumptuously meticulous time battling. Mystical fantasy storytelling that only the Japs can pull off. Many unique aspects only found in FF games. The pinnacle of Eastern RPG's

Western and eastern RPG's are utterly different beasts, these two titles are the best in each field, both are worth the price of the console, therefore just get both! I will! :D

OK, good honest thoughts there, cheers.

Final question then.

This FF XII. It's an MMORPG. Is this gonna be a payable service, and am I gonna be able to go about a 'quest' and meet other people who are perhaps doing the same one to discuss things?

no Final XI was an MMORPG, FFXII is going back to its roots and having single player party goodness!

Is it? All the reviews I've read have said it's an online RPG?

Doh! Silly me. Looking at GamePlay it is actually FF XI which is online.

Hmmm. Gonna have to have a think about this one. Looks stunning, but I can't be doing with all that "Hit Point" and other stuff, I'd sooner control the action myself.

FFXII may not be an MMORPG but it kinda plays like one compared to the past FFs. The gambit system is pretty cool. It means you can control what your computer controlled buddies do in battles.

From the video I saw it looks very different from previous FF games. You actually run around and hit things. Although you do still select your type of attack from a menu. Fights no longer go into a seperate screen, they just happen right there. And there are no longer random battles, you'll just come across monsters as you're walking along.
