I've had the GOTY edition sitting on my shelf for some time but started playing it last night.

I understand it got rave reviews when it came out but has it stood the test of time? I've just closed the first gate to Oblivion and I'm wondering what all the fuss is about?

Is it a case of if I had played it when it first came out, I'd have enjoyed it all the more?

Well its 5 years old and the replacement to it is out at the end of the week so you are a bit behind on that front... :p

don't bother closing the gates of oblivion thats a bit tedious. Just kill a random innocent person and follow that story line, when you do it you'll understand ;)

I agree with pingwing

The best way to play Oblivion is not to, well, play it. Ignore the main quest, wander out into the wilderness and you'll soon find things to keep you interested.

Try to avoid using fast-travel as much as possible. Yes, it takes forever to get anywhere, but you'll end getting side-tracked to more interesting things on your way.

Whenever I pick the game up after a while I just choose a direction or a point on the map I haven't investigate before and see what comes up.

Stick with it, it's worth your effort! :)

I picked up the fishing quest but died twice in succession so sacked that one off.

Side quests in Fallout 3 are lots better.
