had a quick gander on the search to see if there was an official thread i could necro but no luck, so making a nice fresh thread.

so been playing a lot of borderlands because it's one of the better games that can run on this laptop during my temporary "break" with my main rig.

but the whole space thing was getting a bit samey, so fired up oblivion to have a go through as i know for sure skyrim won't run (or more correctly i can't play vanilla any more and this machine wont run modded).

anyway, before i get too much rambling in i've hit an issue:

random mouse twitching, mostly up and down, and only in game.

at first i suspected a hardware issue (tis a cheap dell mouse of unknown origin but likely as old as optical mice in general), but it does not happen at all anywhere except in game.

it's gradually getting worse too, started recently but the longer i go through the worse it's getting.

anyone experienced anything like this? i'm not running mods, just vanilla with dlc, and graphics aren't exactly maxed out either.

I'm guessing it isn't the issue as you are talking about performance constraints hah but Oblivion and Skyrim can have issues with that due to framerates going over 60fps at which point the horizontal and vertical mouse sensitivities become different and you can get erratic mouse input with severe framerate changes as the sensitivity multiplier suddenly changes a lot.

i don't think so, although it does happen more frequently when in dialogue menu's (although not exclusively)

i wouldn't think i'm normally breaching 60, it's smooth but i'm running basically no frills except for maximum texture resolution and medium tree loading.

it seems to be mainly vertical glitching, not horizontal.

just tried it there to see if lifting the mouse did anything, no change and there doesn't appear to be any debris etc on the sensor (plus it's only confined in-game)

I think the problem is that you're playing Oblivion instead of Morrowind. ;)

i see what you did there....

i missed out on morrowind the first time round, and trying to play it now is too much of a time shock for me to be as engaged (lack of draw distance, low graphic fidelity, lack of voice acting etc), hell dealing with the faces in oblivion is hard enough :D

i'm holding out for skywind to come to fruition (if it comes to fruition) so i can enjoy the plot without these issues.

Have you not tried any of the graphical overhaul mods? I think there are a few that update all of the textures and stuff to be on par with those of Oblivion or even beyond. Either way, it's definitely worth playing for the story alone. Certainly the best of the Elder Scrolls in my opinion.

Skywind would be awesome though!

i have my policy never to cheat or mod a game on the first playthrough.

of course i suppose skywind probably counts, but at least i'd be playing with a more familiar set of mechanics. i never liked the whole "running insta-gibs your stamina" mechanic, realistic though it may be.

the biggest nail was the voice acting (or lack of), sounds bad i know but the whole reading pages of text with no audio kinda kills my immersion, guess i've been too spoiled by modern games with full voicing. of course i beleive the skywind project is endeavouring to fix that so i really hope it comes through!

Similar kind of policy here - but I will use mods that either increase the ease of using the UI or fix other clunky gameplay mechanics or provide a straight up tidying up of visual stuff that don't change from the spirit of the original game.

Kind of like the approach I took with Skyrim modding though it won't appeal to some as it keeps a lot of the spirit of the original game while looking a bit more modern.

Oblivion gets a bit upset if you play with mouse and keyboard but with a Xbox 360 controller plugged in. For me this causes the weapon select wheel to be permanently open and the screen to slowly rotate.

No idea, never had a problem myself (definitely try out Morrowind with just one mod called morrowinf overhaul... it does install a lot of mini mods for you but all are graphical/bug fixes. It's a great game, I'm currently back on it myself having not played it since it was first released.

Anyway, back to your problem...
1. Tried it in windowed mode?
2. Tried setting vsync on? Got anything that monitors the framerate to check what it's doing?
3. Check you don't have mouse acceleration on in windows.
4. Check if there any bug fix/patch mods out there.

edit: Make sure you're playing the most up to date patched version which if you're playing on steam it will be.
There is an unofficial patch that fixes a lot of things, may be worth a shot.

its a mystery, it was running fine for ages then just started doing it for no reason without any changes.

only thing i can think of it its possibly related to the size of the save file? i'm guessing it's like skyrim in that respect that the longer you play the bigger said file gets, although i haven't tried starting a new game to check that specifically.

not running mouse accell, and google's turned up a blank on this particular issue (plenty of issues with the cursor randomly appearing in windowed mode admittedly), tis on steam so all up to date, although haven't got the unnofficial patch or any other mods.

i'll check vsync (hopefully it's not like trying to get skyrim vsync...) although frame rates are smooth and without tearing so i'd wager it's on

just downloaded fraps (didn't think i'd need it on this machine- framerate is a number i don't necessarily want to see :D) and report back on the frames.

it's moving about 1/2" of screen space, or 1" of mouse movement so it's pretty substantial

You mention the fact that you're playing on a laptop with the Internal keyboard. Before getting too deep technically, are you sure you're not using the keyboard in such a way that you accidentally touch the track pad during gameplay?

If not, I'd turn it off and attempt to replicate the fault with it completely ruled out.

i tried setting it to deactivate when there's a usb mouse installed, but that doesn't work. but the issue still happens completely hands free on both trackpad and mouse lifted up so the sensor isn't contacting.

just fired it up with fraps running- a stable 60 so it's not the framerate.

funny the issue seems to have cleared up today, not sure what's up with that, maybe it's down to session time? i have a habit of leaving this thing running because i cba re-launching.
