i'm having a clear out of all the bits and bobs i've collected over the years and i have a small mountain of ribbon cables, dial up modems, video monitor cables, power cables, graphic cards ( found a geforce 1 card, i might keep that as a curio :) ) etc... you get the picture.

it's stuff i know i'll never use again, but it seems a waste to throw it away to landfill. Is this stuff recyclable?

I'm curious what junk everyone else has accumulated as well :D

You are meant to (although you dont have to) recycle it under the WEEE directive. (WEEE = waste electric and electronic equipment)
your local tip with proper recycling facilities should have a WEEE bin or two.

From Evenvironment agencies website:

"The WEEE Directive aims to minimise the amount of WEEE householders throw out with their general rubbish.

By keeping WEEE separate from other waste it can be treated, the hazardous substances can be removed and a large amount of waste can be recycled rather than sent to landfill.

Householders are not banned from disposing of WEEE in their bin but the WEEE Regulations have created a network of collection points for WEEE.

Householders should now find it easier to recycle their old equipment through a mixture of improved local authority civic amenity sites and new take-back facilities provided by retailers. These are operating now.

Householders can:
ask the retailer if they'll take products back
take old appliances to their local civic amenity site
arrange for their local authority to collect the equipment (some local authorities provide a free collection service and others charge)
arrange for an electrical retailer delivering new equipment to take away the old appliance

Note: householders are now covered by the duty of care and must ensure they only pass their waste to a registered waste carrier or other approved person."

check your local councils website for it and should tell you:

i would try and sell most of it on the MM, like Huddy said, its suprisingly hard to get old stuff nowadays.

I hoarded so much stuff like cables, casesm old Pentium 4's, Radeon cards, GeForce 2 MX, in the end they are useless now so I've just given the best stuff away and thrown the rest in the bin

Had to do the same recently, found quite a few old dial up modems sum even slower than 56k, sadly I did not know of the weee thing so it just went into gerneral trash

When my mum moved hosue a few years ago I had to clear out the garage come my workshop.

So much old gear, all had to be thrown away. If you repear a lot of PCs its useful to hold on to.

Most of the time I just leave the old hardware inside a box tucked away somewhere unless I really need to sell or dump them away. And when I can be bothered and assuming some of them still work, I would want to try and rebuild them as a small old PC just for the sake of trying older software or games, many of which would have incompabilties with today's modern systems. I just love their sentimental nostalgia factor. Not to mention if in the future, some desperate person would want something and you can make a quick buck out of it :D.

I tend to amass enough old bits to knock up a basic rig every couple of years which I tend to give away
Last one was a 1600 palamino/512mb ram/40gb HDD/Geforce 4200ti/Msi board all in a silver HP case with DVD.

One of my mums friends thinks Nasa has been installed lol

If you're into building PCs you need spares, even if old they're useful substitutes when trouble shooting. I have enough bits to make a couple of PCs, with lots left over. Just made a Bitza PC for father in law, 3GHz P4 (I thought it was fast when I bought it new a few years ago). Old cases are a pain though as they take up so much space.
