Hi guys

I have a gigabit line, modem to computer I get a ping of 1, download of 950Mbps and an upload of 98Mbps.

Unfortunatly I cannot keep the pc connected to the modem by a direct ethernet cable (bloody wife) so I have power line adaptors however this gives a poor result of 160Mbps down and 97Mbps up. I guess it is the wiring and interference causing a drop.

Before I spend money is it possible to get a better speed via Wifi from the router and a wifi card / dongle. The router has a 5ghz setting that says 1300Mbps. Everything else in the house (mobiles and Xbox) connects to the 2.4Ghz 130Mbps option.

Thanks for any help. Not clued up on networks, even this simple :)

Stairs and doorways really aren't that much of an issue, if you run it just under the edge of the carpet it's invisible, she wouldn't even be able to see it. I have personally run a lot of cables like this with brilliant outcomes. Very thin self adhesive trunking is also an option.

External an option? go out and then come back in?

Upgrade wife - you know you want to :D

As above flat ethernet and a little planning or carefully plan a route that makes it less obvious. I have a visible cable run in the lounge, I say visible, it's white, same as the skirting and the only part you really notice are the loops securing it to the top edge as they're silver, 30 seconds with a white pen and they're camouflaged, when the skirting it painted next they'll be almost invisible.

If neither of those are options (usually they are, people are just reluctant to do the work in favour of an easy option), then what powerline adapters are you using? are both of them on the same circuit? Have you plugged direct tot he socket? Are you using a spur socket? I tested subjectively a few weeks back with low end Nano 500's, I could half the sync speed just by plugging into extensions at each end, it was a moot point anyway as the lan port is limited to 100mbit and the direct sync was 330ish.

I suppose you should know why your wife said no? If you both pay rent it's equal rights.

If her reason for not wanting you to have it is because she won't like the way it looks, make it out of sight. She gets what she wants and you get your gigabit internet.

ah she has been with me 17 years, wouldnt get much of a trade in value :)

I am using TP Link 1200 Mbps 3-Port Gigabit Passthrough Powerling Starter Kit but 3 of the units. One is Modem to Unit, then a Unit in the living room to feed one Xbox and Sky and then a Unit upstairs to feed the pc. I am direct into a socket each time but unsure if they are spur sockets.

Will have a look at routing a long cable I think as that seems to be the only option.

My fibre box is in the under stairs cupboard which is annoying. In my last house I go to choose where it went and it all went in my office room.

160Mbps over Powerline which is pretty good, more than most people manage.

Zero context so no way of knowing whether wireless would do any better. Even if it was better it'd still be no way near Gigabit speeds.

If you need to run a cable just do it and make a decent job of it. As mentioned if done properly it should be barely noticeable. Also as mentioned don't forget that drilling the walls and running an external cable is often a good option.

I'm getting over 700Mbps on my Devolo 1200Mbps Powerlines. Only problem is the gay power save feature where it drops internet connection while idle. PC Still connected to both powerline i just have to enable then disable powersave and good to go. New property will have Ethernet cabling for dam sure!

Have any electrician friends that can help you run a cable?

Since it's no risk unlike a power cable, you can get inventive and go up inside the stairs etc. Just do it when your wife is out and hide it well.

On this basis, oh so many projects have been undertaken :D
