Hey guys,

I bought a 2008 Renault Clio Dci few months back with 90k on the clock, but service history in the book is only from 70k onwards.

I'm trying to find out whether or not the timing belt has been changed as it's starting to worry me. My mechanic says he can still see writing on the belt and if it was the original belt that would likely have worn off.

Clios are a nightmare to work with so I'm trying to contact all previous owners to see if the belt was ever changed, saving me about £350.

How would I go about this?

Thanks!

Just spend the £350 and change it. The time and effort and hassle of trying to track down all the owners will more than outweigh the cost. Plus you have little way of proving they are telling the truth either.

You can write to the DVLA to request this and you need to give them some money. You also need a good reason why you are requesting it.

That was my thought. If they couldn't be bothered to service it and stamp the book they'll not be interested in helping you with it. The mechanics theory sounds dubious at best - no proof that it's been done, no sticker and no history means that it's almost certainly not been done

However as already mentioned, the original owners don't have to tell you.

Might be worth checking with Renault dealer, to see whether they have service history for the car within their network? Some servicing is done completely digitally these days (i.e. no stamped book), or the original service book could have been lost?

If the car was a Ferrari or some other high end car, then I could understand chasing previous owners for details, but for a Clio not really. If someone tried to contact me about one of my previous cars, I don't think I would be particularly interested in helping.

Yeah screw it, just going to get it done. Thought if it were fairly straight forward getting the info it would be worth it but looks to be too much hassle.

Cheers guys thanks a lot for the help!

edit. Thanks Armageus, that's worth a try, cheers mate.
