OC 4Ghz bundles problem

I just brought 4ghz bundles with new Antec 1200 Twelve Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case because I took it back to overclockers as Rich had sorted out my cpu cooler not seated correct and temp went too high over 90C+ as he advise me to get a good airflow tower case as this is the main reason I had brought a new Antec 1200 Twelve Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case to fitted the motherboard on it.

I got serious problem now with my parts here:

Antec 1200 Twelve Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case
Core i7 920 D0 4.00Ghz
Patriot Viper 6GB 1600Mhz at 8.8.8.24
Titan TTC CPU Cooler Fenrir
Arctic Silver 5 Paste (Rich had sorted it out for me)
Gigabyte GA EX58-UD5
Corsair toughpower 750W pwer supply
Geforce 260GTX x 1 (at freq 101)
DVD-RW Writer x 1
Samsung spinpoint F1 7200RPM 1TB Hard Disk x 1

The pc run at idle at 54C 4.00Ghz but full load at prime95 after 5 minutes the temp was reading at real temp 3.00 is 96C (too high)

Run flight simulator X and load the game, after 2 minutes the pc freeze and stopped but temp reading at 81C with around 25% in use. Graphic card temp is 47C.

I turn off 4.00Ghz and go back to 2.66Ghz and flight simulator X with temp at full load was normal under 70C after 30 minutes using prime95.

I don't know why is not stable and why is temp run over 90C+ with full load as couldn't playing flight simulator at 4.00Ghz ?

I thought the tower case is great airflow as all cable management cables, wires was hidden in the back side of the case leave all motherboard very clearly and space for a good airflow.

What can I do next ? I was disappointed as I thought Rich advise me correct of buying the good tower case with good airflow but compare to my old tower case, it still the same, no different to flight simulator x freeze and temp went too high.

Very disappointed and really annoying. Spend £540 on the bundles and spend £138 on the new tower case.

I kicked myself of wish not purchase it all in the first place and just forget the 4Ghz bundles.

I am seriously re-consider take it back to overclockers to get rich to test it out again ? Cos I know it not right at all. Or maybe I can buy V8 Coolermaster cooler or go for Noctua NH-U12P SE1366 CPU Cooler with two fans together or go for Akasa AK-967 Nero Direct Contact Heatpipe CPU Cooler or even better Thermalright Ultra-120 Extreme CPU Cooler with two fans ?

I had phoned up Intel about DO stepping cpu processor overclocked and phoned up Gigabyte about the board overclocked.

Intel told me that the i7 920 D0 stepping cpu processor is not advise to do overclocked of more than 3.20Ghz and the cpu temp should be no more than 67C for 3.20Ghz overclocked. They also told me if I use 4.00Ghz overclocked and temp of no more than 80C but the lifespan will be reduced and no guarantee for the cpu to die at anytime. They advise me to stick with 3.20Ghz no more than 67C temp. They advise me not to do 4.00Ghz overclocked.

The gigabyte told me that my board can cope with overclocked but only up to 3.20Ghz support for my GA EX-58 UD5 but were suggest me to go for the top range motherboard GA EX-58 Extreme with water-cooling and should be stable at 4.00Ghz+ overclocked.

So, I had to go back to 3.20Ghz default and that's it. I don't want my i7 920 cpu processor chip going to die if overclocked 4.00Ghz and over 67C in temp. Not worth to lose my cost money on the cpu processor and motherboard.

I think overclockers co uk should sell i7 920 with water-cooling with gigabyte extreme motherboard instead ?

I had finally sorted it out myself. I had brought myself a new infrared thermometer to test the ambient temp is 22C. I had also replaced the new cpu cooler - putting the new V8 Coolmaster and dumped the Titan Fenrir and guess what !!!

Idle temp of cpu is 42C (4.00Ghz) V8 Coolmaster
Idle temp of cpu is 54C (4.00Ghz) Titan Fenrir
Full load of cpu is 77C (4.00Ghz) V8 Coolmaster (full load for 60 minutes)
Full load of cpu is 96C (4.00Ghz) Titan Fenrir (full load for 5 minutes)

It now stable when running flight simulator X after 60 minutes playing the game with V8 Coolmaster and the cpu temperature at around between 42C and 77C for 60 minutes without no freeze !

So, the V8 Coolmaster had now resolved better than rubbish Titan Fenrir.

I am happy now. Much relief myself. It a pity that Rich never try out the V8 Coolmaster on the bundles.

Are you sure the Fenrir was seated correctly with good thermal contact?

Rich had sorted my Titan Fenrir by seated it correctly and re-apply paste on it when I went back to OC's but until I get home I take the motherboard out and fitted into my new case as the temp still too high over 90C after Rich sorted it out. So, I replaced V8 Coolmaster, everything seem ok all day today, temp never go over 78C on the real temp v3.00 and the gigabyte easytune6 cpu temp show as 58C.

Seem ok now as I personal think could be faulty Titan Fenrir ? I wouldn't NOT blame on Rich for why he had use Titan Fenrir rather than other best cpu cooler's. No personal reason. It just my bad luck, unlucky day. !

I had now fitted Thermalright 120 Extreme with the fan that coming from Titan Fenrir fan. Turn on turbo boost in the bios, and overclocked 4.2Ghz at 1.250volt (vcore) and 1.620volt (dram) at 8.8.8.24.

Using Arctic Cooling MX-2 Thermal Compound with a tiny pea size in the middle and then placed the thermalright 120 Extreme cpu cooler on it and tested it.

Room temp : 25C
Idle temp : 39C at 4.2Ghz
Full Load temp : 71C at 4.2Ghz (full load for 6 hours)

I set Tjmax at 100% on the real temp v3.00. Everything very stable for 6 hours full load with temp not touching any 80C yet.

I am glad to choose as my Thermalright 120 Extreme is the best cooling performance out there.

It's a great piece of kit, I don't understand why people no longer view it as No.1 choice for aircooling?

Anyway well done bulldog147, despite getting stressed you managed to sort the problem out in the end!

I do agree with you as I cannot understand why is Thermalright 120 Extreme is no longer as no1 choice for air-cooling.

I am thinking of getting the best 120mm fan x 2 for my thermalright 120 Extreme with a very good heatsink airflow. Can anyones help me which 120mm fan is the best ?

If you don't mind being deaf, the delta fan pushes a serious amount of air :D

190CFM

:) It funny you said if I don't mind being deaf as I am deafness in both ears since birth, so, it doesn't bother me at all. I had order that 'fan' delta fan with 4000RPM from scan co uk last night because overclockers co uk is out of stock.

I look forward to use this fan delivery tomorrow. I will try that tomorrow.

Also, I find it very interesting about how to apply paste proper here:

http://www.thermalright.com/new_a_page/product_page/chi11_factor/cf2/install_chill_cf2.htm

I did that with these instruction as my idle temperature now at 35C and full load temperature at 67C after 6 hours full load at 4.2Ghz with turbo mode on as I am glad to follow this instruction.

Try it, it will make a lot difference !! :)

Woah 67C full load is very good for air cooling a 4.2GHz i7. And you say that's without the delta fan?

still awaiting for a delta fan arrive tomorrow by city link delivery. Yes, I was amazing of full load of just 67C with the correct paste instruction. I use MX2 paste. I had moved my pc to other room with the wooden floor with no carpet at all. Much cooling room with room temp only at 19C !

I was hoping of drop the temp down to below 60C full load with a delta fan tomorrow :)

Cos I am using Titan Fenrir fan that was current at 2280RPM
