On the wagon, sorta
hi everyone trying to oc my new rig got a e2140 on a ga-g33m s2 with 2gb of ddr2 800 im getting to about 2.04ghz and i just cant go any firther im putting it down to the ram and the fact the motherboared doesnt seem to lock the fsb of the ram is this normal?
i get to options for multi's on the ram and thats 3 somthing and 4.00 3.odd put the fsb to 950 while 4 puts it well over 1000 and thats with a cpu set of 8x multi and 255 fsb as shown here.

temps are around 40c at idle and 58 with both cores at full load and one last thing the cpu fan will not spin untill about 20 seconds after boot up and this is the same for every system fan attached to the mobo aswell is this right?

OK - temps are fine. Fans not spinning is fine too; they're temp-controlled.

Problem won't be the RAM. You need to run the RAM with a ratio of 2.00 - this will allow the FSB to reach 400Mhz before the RAM even reaches stock speed.

Your FSB is at 1020 because it's quad-pumped on Intels - 4x the base FSB. Your RAM will run at 2x the base FSB when in sync.

only ratio i get is 3.33 and 4.00 looks like im outta luck no option to have 1:1 little gutted now lol!
here is the option i have in the section that lets me oc

MB INtelligent tweaker (m.i.t)

robust graphics booster [auto]
cpu clock ratio [x8]
cpu host clock control [enabled]
cpu host freaquancy [255]
pci express freaquancy [auto]
system memory multiplyer (spd) [3.33] only options are auto and 3.33 or 4.00
memory freaquancy [954]
high speed dram dll setting[option 1] only has option one or two

system voltage control [auto]
ddr2 overvolt [auto]
fsb overvault [auto]
(G)mch overvolt [auto]
cpu voltage control [auto]

and thats it so whats up have i just been stupid and pick the baddest bored for oc'in or am i missing somthing from another menu?
i dont have any options to set memory timings any were either.

It would help if we had your full specs.

Your vcore is too high for that clock speed, i would lower it to 1.3 to start with and see how you go from there but to do that you need to change the voltages form manual to auto.

Once you find your max overclock that you are comfatable with then you can start to fine tune the vcore to find the lowest (stable) for your rig.

Your memory devider seems a tad stange, but i've never heard of that board.

I have asked for your system specs, but its the memory votage im after really then we can look at setting manual votages instead of "auto".

When in bios look for you fan settings, they want setting to Legacy and pwm.

Change your PCIE from auto to 100 and for now change the memory multiplyer to 3.33 as its probably your memory stopping you going any further .

Have you checked for any bios updates as there might be a fix for the memory devider options.

i there mate er this is the spec of my rif so far

core 2 e2140
2gb ddr2 elixer (value i think) 5-5-5-12 not sure on voltages
160gb sata2 hdd
gigabyte ga-g33m-s2 mobo
windows xp mce 2k5 sp2
400watt psu
no graphics yet getting replacemant psu and 8800gts at the weekend

ok updated the bios with no change set cpu vcore to 1.3 and found out the voltage for the ddr2 its 1.8v wich i have set it to also changed the fan settings aswell

This board doesnt seem like much of an overclocker. Maybe the onboard VGA is effecting your oc. I second what Gary suggested, set PCIe to 100. You can also try using only one stick of ram this can somtimes help, if you can oc a little further on one stick its likely that the ram is the problem.

finnaly got somewere with google and trauling posts turns out these boareds are limited on the ddr deviders and people are holding out hope for a bios update to solve the problem.
some people with nice oc's on e6600's and e4300's they say the divider your given for the ram is governed by the cpu installed somehow.
e6600 gives you the option between 2.00 and another setting were as mine is only 3.33 and 4.00
so it looks like im waiting on a bios update to solve the problem ill have to be happy with 2.04ghz for now :/
thaks for all ya help everyone though anf ive set the settings you have all said so the machine should run rock solid until i can update the bios hopefully and tweak it a bit more.

Thats a shame, though you should still be able to get a little higher if you give your ram a little more volts they should be able to oc further. Also increasing timing can increase their max frequency.

if i was to set my cpu to that and the dram multiplyer to 3.33 my memory would be runing at a freaquancy of 1332 wich i can see happnin lol.
erm emailed gigabyte and got a reply pretty promptly from there support team asking if i had checked the extended bios (ctrl+f1) so i have replied back telling them i have.
hopefully shouldnt be to long before i hear back

pcie bus is locked but it wont pass 270fsb 3.33 multi on the ram.
seems to be when the ram gets to about the 900mhz mark its just locks off checked all the timings on the ram set them correct even gave the ram a l;ttle mor juice but its not top brand stuff so i dont feel comfortable pumping the fsb and juice through it.
should have invested in 1066mhz ram and it would have been good for 2.6ghz on the cpu with the crappy multi's lol machines only a day old so i aint getting depressed and trading it off for other parts at my loss ill just hangfire and see what happens lol!
after that it will have to be a new boared if nothing happens to sort it

Did you loosen the timings a bit? i.e. higher numbers :D

Dont be too affraid to give your ram some more volts. Ive dished out the volts like there was no tomorrow and i never killed a stick.

aye even set them to 6-7-7-16 managed to get it to boot to windows at 2.14ghz but unstable so i just reverted back i had but +0.1v on the ram and boareds default is my rams default 1.8 so ive had it on 1.9

Shame, not much more i can think of :(

Hmm i'd be very tempted to say this is solely down to mobo issues here... because it's highly unlikely your RAM or CPU are holding you back. Get a DS3. :)

Yes its deffinetley your board thats letting you down.

Due to the memory divider options its stopping you from raisng the fsb without it having a direct affect on the memory.

Basically all you can do is raise the fsb untill your memory cant take any more then back off just enough for it to run stable.

Or get a new mobo

just a quick upadate gigabyte released a bios update today adding more deviders hehe!
shame its not for my boared its for the g33m ds29/ich9r chipset and i have the g33m s2/ich9 i new i should have went for the raid :( emailed them to ask if my boared was getting the releasecant be to much diffrent raid is the only real thing thats diffrent i think
