hi new to overclocking , built a new rig last month its an i7 920 on an asus p6t ws revolution mobo , dont wanna go mad but would like to get around the 3.1 ghz mark from what i ve read i know the chip will handle it but im afraid to fiddle dont know if anyone is running this speed and if they are what do i have to do to acheive it without blowing up my computer lol many thanksoc i7

i was in ur position a few months ago, i learnt what to do eventually and now have achieved a stable 3.8ghz clock, 3.1 is too easy, if you go into bios and change the blck clock i think until u reach exactly 3.4ghz with hyperthreading on you won't have to change anything else it will all be automatic and your comp will feel miles faster, if you still can't do it just ask me and i'll tell u in more detail. But 3.4ghz won't harm ur computer at all so give it a try

When you go into your bios, look for an option to change voltages/frequencies. Find the qpi and change that to say 165. and make sure your multiplier is set to 19. That should give you 3.1ish. Also turn off speed stepping and turbo mode. I would then go into my vcore and set that to something like 1.1875-1.200. That should give you a stable overclock of 3.1, and keep temps down. You should be able to do this with the stock cooler even but it's cutting it close..
Don't worry you won't blow up your rig. The worst thing would be a blue screen, but then it's just going back into the bios and usually upping vcore slightly. Never set it to more than 1.4, and you will be fine. I don't advise using any overclock and setting the vcore to "auto" because it may pump out some crazy volts during gaming, or undervolt causeing a crash. Really out of all the settings in the bios you are only adjusting 3 settings and if your pc won't boot after an adjustment, find your cmos button, and it will reset all settings back to normal. It is literally that easy.
