Hi guys

Me and a mate are thinking of doing one of those crazy things where we pool together, get an old knackered sports car (current candidate of promise being an old mx5) and fixing it up/enjoying it on the few occasions the weather allows.

Thing is, we're both young folks with bmw's as our daily's, so as im sure you can imagine our insurance premiums are slightly massive as it is, and neither of us could justify paying a full years worth on a car we might only bother driving once a month.

Is there such a thing as occasional insurance? Something we can ring up and get put on of a weekend. The car will be off the road mostly although kept up to date with mot etc.

I don't think so, it needs a photo of your mug and the car. Don't know if it requires the car to be insured under another policy though so do check first

Good point, this wont have any full time insurance if we can do this.

Wouldnt need to go so far as an hour, but something as convinient as call up in the morning to get put on for the day or call a day ahead for a days insurance.

Guess its either that or the cheapest basic 3rd party for at least one of us

It's not always hourly, they just advertise that as a unique thing. You can get days or weeks IIRC

How young is young?
I can't imagine a years worth of TP insurance on an old MX5 being anything crazy unless you both only passed your test last week and have a stack of accidents or points.

Be careful of the car tax rules with this.

A couple of guys i know who live very close to our local circuit have track cars and used to tax them for the year and just day insure them to take them to the track, but now the current tax rules say the car must be insured at all times otherwise they'll send you a lovely fine. So what it ended up doing was making the guys i know just not bother at all and just risking it driving the few miles to the track.. probably not what was intended by the policy but an unfortunate side effect.

We're both early 20's, afaik you cant do classic insurance until 25? At which point i'll magically become a safe driver and the insurance for the daily will drop below 1k.

Classic is a possibility, but the oldest mx5 we can find is '98 and isnt it 20 years old or older to qualify?

For reference the car will likely be the £6-800 mark value wise.

I've never really looked into classic policies, how easy are they to actually obtain in reality, particularly on modifed/track prepared cars?

I've always kind of assumed that classic policies would have all kinds of terms that would only really make them viable for classics that are more or less original, in decent condition and garaged. Would they just tell me to go away if I tried to get a classic policy on my stripped, modified, caged, turbocharged and (badly faded :() fluorescent orange MR2?

I generally begrudge paying anything to insure a car that only gets driven to where the trailer is stored, plus the occasional test flight after I've been working on it so anything to keep the cost down helps.

Indeed, if it's taxed, it must be insured. If you are only going to insure it for an adhoc day then you'll need to Tax and SORN it every time you take it out.

I had my MX5 at 19 and my insurance was at it's highest, £600 a year. I'm 24 and have another identical mx5, and this years quote is under £300.

Not the case, I can easily get quotes for a Ford Capri where just about the only original part is the shell (Cosworth V6, Sierra Cosworth brakes, shortened final drive, lowered etc) Still comes in at less than my Diesel 115BHP Mondeo.

Does your insurance not cover you to drive other cars? You could get a family member to insure the car for the year cheaply and then drive it on your normal insurance?
