OCCT overclocking ??

Hello all overclocking noob here so please be gentle :) i have oc'd my q9450 to 3ghz and i am using OCCT to test stability so far it is good. I noticed when occt is running it seems to oc the cpu more then i have and i am puzzled as when i try to oc to the settings occt uses it bluescreens. Can one of you oc'rs explain what is happening as i am a bit confused. Thanks in advance for any replys :).
 
I got a giga P45 DS5 mobo and occt seems to routinely add 200mhz to whatever oc i do that is constant. Also it reports the fsb as being at the right figure to get the cpu overclock it states, right now it's reporting the cpu at 3261.8mhz and the mobo fsb at 407.7 which matches the cpu overclock it reports. Very weird althoug i suppose from one point of view it's good because if occt can get that i should be able too :).

Just checked and yes cpuz is showing the same figure as occt so it must be doing an extra overclock that wouldn't be good though if you found you max overclock and then ran occt seems a bit daft to me i thought as i was a complete noob i was missing something simple. So if occt can run that oc why does the damn thing bluescreen when i try to run those settings this overclocking lark can be confusing lol. I started overclocking as i am getting a 4870X2 when it comes out and didn't want the cpu to bottleneck the gfx card too much so was aiming for a 3.3-3.4 overclock in total all i have done so far is up the fsb and upped the cpu voltage to 1.27. Am i right that as long as i don't exceed 1.33 on the cpu no damage is done i am sure i have read that on a few places.

I have set fsb at 375 at the minute and the voltage is at 1.27 which gives me a 3ghz speed but occt overclocks further when i start it testing and it does it straight after the first monitoring minute it just whacks it up to 407 fsb cpu 3.2. I havn't altered any settings in occt so they are at default settings. Greebo your a far more ambitious person then i if i can get it to 3.4 stable i am happy and done with overclcooking lol.
 
No i didn't i didn't think speedstep would make any difference so i left that on and i saw a lot of people saying they couldn't get prime95 working with vista x64 and then i clicked the wrong download link and got orthos anyway.
 
Ok thx i will try that and get back :). Well before disabling eist and c1e occt would run for 12 minutes and freeze since disabling it is still going strong after half an hour so looking good hopefully i will be able to up the overclcock a little more curently at 380fsb and vcore at 1.36 :).

Well i can't seem to get anything over 3ghz stable so maybe i just got a really bad chip as i have tried everything i can think of will stick with what i got and leave it at that i think.
 
Found why i had stablility issues and is a completely noob reason so good job i got that bit in when i started the thread :D. When i was overclocking my cpu i didn't notice my ram was being overclocked as well :o. Have run memtest and ram is fine so no damage done :).Can't seem to detach the two so that upping one does not up the other think i need to do more reading.
 
Yeah i did all that disabled CIA2 whih is what it is on the gigabyte boards and set everything else to standard as it didn't have an option for disabled that had anything to do with clock speeds. I will have another go at it soon keeping an eye on the memory.
 
Well pc is now rock solid at 3.2 with 61 degrees the max under load on the hottest day i can remember for a while so i am now happy. Thanks again to Cob for his help was much appreciated. Occt stopped adding extra to the overclock when i disabled speedstep so whatever it is thats the culprit :).
