OC'd Q6600 to i7 whatever/970/etc - how BIG a jump in perf?

Im using my near 3 year old rig for video editing in Vegas using Cineform intermediates plus Photoshop CS3, NeatImage etc etc

How much (in multiples) faster am I likely to see of an improvement upgrading right now to one of the faster processors available?

I saw a definate 3-4 times improvement when I went from my Athlon 64 3500+ to my OC'd Q6600 @ 3.4 - Eg: something that took 4 minutes to render dropped to 1 minute etc (not using multiple cores there either).

Just looking for real world info from perhaps someone who has made this upgrade.

Thanks :D

In before someone makes comments that the tests aren't fair and side with one CPU or the other and turns in to a 300 reply long thread.

Serious response, I've read it can be up to about twice as fast with encoding.

i use x264 and my i5 750 doing 3.5ghz on all 4 cores was encoding video at around 7fps.
video input was a dvd of the mask2.

i use proper gangster settings that slow the encoding down a lot. but end results are very good.

i've just moved from a c2d Q6600 to an i7 920, i noticed a 20% improvement.
i changed from 8gbs of 1066 ram in dual channel to 6gbs of 1600 in triple channel, i do miss the 2gb off the top, especially in games.

my Q6600 was oc'd to 3.2ghz, my i7 is now up to 3.4ghz.

i have not changed my hard disk, a 150gb wd velociraptor.

the graphics card was changed from an ati 4890 2gb to this card, again, i do miss that 1gb of gddr5.

hope that helps.

summary: 20% overall performance gain (about the same as before in some games), temps down, boot in 45 seconds, 700mb avi to dvd in nero 7 in 21 minutes, hd (mkv) to sd (avi) in 40 minutes (at best quality). Whether you notice it depends on what you do.

And much to Easyrider's disappointment - ' It doesn't list the Phenom x6 ' :D

Obviously that chart is totally wrong and FUD as he likes to say ( whatever that means - quick wiki search says: "a Mexican brand of cold cuts and hot dogs", "Female urination device" ) because 965BE comes up with same performance as 920 which obviously cannot be true since 920 is 10x faster than the 965 in just about everything.

Have you any better charts that you can share ?

not really tested the i stuff myself but tbh i wouldnt (and havent) upgraded my q6600, as humans we always want the latest and greatest but sometimes its better to hang tight for a bit especially if gains arent great (ie wait for next gen of cpus!)
