Hi, new to overclocking so be gentle..............

Just build my first pc
i5 2500k @ 4.2GHz
2 x MSI 6950 2gb
Asus p8p67
8 gb ram

this morning I have had a dabble at OC'ing the cards, 950MHz core 1300MHz memory at 1.25v.

Ran 3dmark 11 about 5 times, the top card reached 79c but averaged 75c,
the bottom card ran at a steady 65-70c.

Is this acceptable or should I start back pedaling?

Thats perfectly fine, 6950's can easily hit 85c and above. Try running kombuster and see what temps you get then. Mine idle around 39c and under gaming load rarely break 70c at 850/1300
