I have a Canon LIDE25 FB scanner, it has the option for 300DPI OCR, however it only converts it into a BMP or TIFF, does anyone know how I can get this into word / openoffice so I can edit the text?

free if poss :)

thanks

There's a few free, but they are not very good. The best by far is tesseract, by google, but it needs a a bit more time. You can download it from http://code.google.com/p/tesseract-ocr/

Commercially there a quite a few and they're usually expensive. Abbyy Finereader is excellent.

Just remembered there definately should be some around as magazine cds ran this sort of thing. Omnipage pro, or some of Xerox offerings maybe you can find an old version somewhere.

I use ABBYY FineReader 8.0 Professional Edition, with little to no errors on a small print document. :)
