Just wondering if anyone has any bright ideas about freely available OCR (optical character recognition) software that I can use in windows xp? I want to be able to scan in written or printed text and be able to use and edit it in word. I have a new scanner but the OCR software that came with it is extremely poor. Any ideas most welcome.

SimpleOCR is about the only "free" one I have come across, usually the OCR software that is supplied with the scanner at time of purchase is adequate to do basic jobs.

If you have Microsoft Office, there is a utility in there called Microsoft Office Document Scanning utility which might do what you want.

The 2 best OCR software applications are Omnipage Pro or Abbyy Finereader Professional, but they are quite expensive. :)
