So whats everyones views on these, mainly the older model with the 1.8T 180bhp engine.

It seems to fit the criteria that i have been looking for, the ones i have been looking at are very much like this one:
http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/SKODA+OCTAVIA/Ne-2-4-5-6-7-8-27-44-49-53-61-64-67-103-133-146-236,N-148-240-4294965345-4294966292/advert.action?R=200921334871420&distance=148&postcode=&channel=CARS&make=SKODA&model=OCTAVIA&min_pr=&max_pr=&max_mileage=&vehicleYearOfManufacture=2003&vehicleRegLetter=03

I have heard bad things about the 1.8T engine however these may not be true, whats the engine like?

Great value for money, i've had mine about 3 years now...

Can't say i've had any major issues with it, maf filter went (£80) and a caliper (£200 fitted).

Common issues are coil packs (£25 each) and maf sensors.

Servicing is reasonable, even from skoda themselves. Plenty of parts if you decide to mod and remaps are quite popular on them. Engine is known to be reliable and there are quite a few on the skoda forums that had theirs remapped early on and are running 150k+ miles.

Exhaust/engine in standard form sounds okish, would prefer a bit more of an exhaust note though personally.

Brakes are great with 312mm at the front and 256mm at the back, so they stop well.

Cambelt and waterpump should be replaced together at 60k or 4 years, although I think this may have changed recently.

Interior is nowhere near as bad as people think/make out to keep clean and it's very well put together. I've done a few 300-400 miles trips and it's been a pleasure.

Overall a great car in my opinion.

I rather like the interior myself, really like the white/black seats! Whats your MPG's like, when driving hard and driving normally?

The only reason i mentioned the engine was because i was told it's the same as what was in the 1.8T Golf which i heard was utter trash (however as it didn't come from ocuk, i didn't belive it ;))

Is the one i linked to well priced (obviously whatever i go for i will get the price down)

Ff you were wondering i quite oftern do 150mile each way trip home, and then only drive to play golf, or to tesco which is about 14miles away (sucks i know) so i wanted something comfy to drive but still have that 'grunt' when i wanted to have abit of fun.

On long trip I averaged ~38 mpg (iirc) with air con on, 4 adults and luggage over two tanks of petrol. When pushing on I guess mid 20s?

Has a decent amount of grunt in standard form and even better when remapped. Autotest managed 14.7 to 100 but apparently this was fettled to 190bhp.

Yeh i've heard they map well up to around 220bhp, however i wouldn't be remapping at first. That is until i start to get the urge for POWAR! :p

Thats quite good MPG to say you had that much in the car, im easily looking at 40+ with just myself, brilliant.

Had mine mapped by ECU Evolution (they use DNA maps) to 210-220bhp (not RR'd it yet to verify). A MASSIVE improvement, a lot more low down torque which makes for easy motorway driving now.

Pretty happy with the car so far, handling wise it's not amazing (then it is an estate and my previous car was a mk 1.5 focus which is well known for handling well) but in a straight line it's fairly quick.

Similar engine to my Audi S3 and TT but with ~ 225 bhp. Long trips would be around 38 m.p.g., and overall around 34 m.p.g.

What sort of wear and tear does remapping do to engines. Obviously they are not ment to give the output that the remap gives them otherwise they would be like that at stock? I have seen a few with 'boost controllers' so you can switch between 180 - 210+ bhp.

By similar, you mean "many many differences".

Different head, different turbo, different intake...

Unfortunately, I cannot remember the exact details - it was over 10 years ago that I got the S3. My recollection is stronger internals - rather turbo etc - the more the power increase.

The one you posted originally seems very much overpriced! I'd do some research if you are considering that one :)

I agree, does seem quite pricey compared to most. There's a 2004 VRS on autotrader with an alleged 10400* miles for £3995, though it's yellow which I suspect will put a lot of people off.

* Typical dealer trick to pull the punters in, what's the chances it actually has 104k miles?

The one i posted in my first post was mainly just to show you the model i had been looking at. Its quite hard to find one, i think the nearest one to me is about 80miles away :O

Over 10 years ago? Did you have a pre-production sample, thought they were only just reaching 10 years old?

They are pretty good in my completely biased opinion. I had my one remapped last week and despite going for a safe revo with around 206BHP the extra grunt down low and pretty much max bhp at 4500RPM has really lifted it.

Even as standard though they are good. The engine is the same as the 1.8T golf pretty much but with an extra 30bhp.

I've seen <30mpg over a tank twice. My general average is around 32 mpg.

My average mpg is around 33-36 on my 30 miles M4 and then 3-4 miles awful London commute. It's been so long since I used it properly at the weekend I forget what fun mpg is :(

Rob, do you have a more pronounced turbo whistle now? I found that hilariously addictive - like having just got the car again, windows down etc.

Mine is standard atm though, but if you say it vastly improve motorway grunt then I might just have to do it :/
