hi,

initially started as x1600XT vs x800 gto16, informed that x800 was better, been checking for reviews etc and the 6800GS as come into the equation being as there is about £6 difference.

opinions please.

Hi there

They are both very close and both overclock very well. You can't really go wrong with either card.

Yeh I would have the 6800 over the x800 as your games will look better. You just have to be able to put up with a slightly lower fps. Really though, theres nothing in it, up to you.

I honestly can't see any reason to recommend the X800 over the 6800GS if you're going to play at stock. The 6800GS has more features and is very close on performance.

However, if overclocking, I heard the X800's can sometimes do up (and over) X850XTPE speeds.

The XFX 6800GS XXX Extreme Edition is on special offer this week at £146 inc VAT, this would be better than the OCuk version as it is already overclocked and not much more expensive. Better hurry up though!

does the gs not have 12 pipes and the x800 gto 16 not have, well, 16?

if im right then its a no brainer - cards cant really run hdr and sm3 fast enough to make use of it at a decent res

Yes that's true but pipelines aren't everything!

A good example would be a 16 pipe X1800XT vs a 24 pipe 7800GTX
True but at this time - 6800/X800, they used a similar architecture and pipes were equal in output i.e. nV 16 pipes = ATi 16 pipes. Now they have followed different paths so we can't compare but at this time we could in a roundabout way.

Good point

My X800Pro has 12 pipes though and that was pretty close to the 6800GT (although not as quick, granted!)

It looks like the X800GTO16 is like an X800XL and the 6800GS is like a 6800GT

If he can get the XFX XXX Extreme Edition 6800GS though this comes pre-overclocked making it quicker

Quite right. At stock, he might as well get the GS XXX for the eye candy. Seeing as there isn't much in it at stock...

cheers all, gonna go with the GS being as it appears to be the newer chipset and it replaces an nvidia.

hopefully wont regret it :D
