Hi,

I bought one of the 7900gs's when they were on offer, all has been fine until now when I'm happily playing a game and suddenly get booted to the desktop with an error saying no directx capable hardware installed.

So far i've tried reinstalling the drivers, this didnt work, no directx app works, same error.

Reinstalled directx, same error.

Bit the bullet and formatted, needed doing anyway then ran into a whole new problem that appears no matter what drivers I use, shipping or latest:

No vga drivers installed, fresh xp, motherboard drivers installed, no issues except obviously no acceleration:

Same setup, drivers installed, no option to change res or colour depth, tried shipping and latest drivers. Nothing installed other than xp, mobo drivers and avg which I installed later:

Since then have reformatted and installed only the chipset inf and the vga drivers, result same problem. Updated motherboard bios, no help.

Any ideas or is the card borked?

System:
core2 duo e6300
gigabyte ds3
2gb 533mhz kingston ram
tagan 480w psu

which drivers are you installing? they shoudl be the 91.47 officials from nvidia site. make sure you get them

but if its not a software problem, then looks like another one bites the dust.

91.47 forcewares from the nv site mate, even the shipping drivers dont work now

hmm, all i can think of is one thing but if you do a quick search on the forums here for the words "7900 failure" im sure you will get the answers your looking for.

i feel for you man, i really do :(

Thats all I can think as well because nothing has changed software wise and for it to be happening on a fresh install adds to the oddness of it. Oh well, looks like i'll try it in an amd pc tomorrow and failing that send it back. Thanks for the help ;) .

are you sure that is set to 32-bit colour in the driver control panel?
looks like 8-bit to me

edit : ah no option to change it, missed that :o
checked on the display options via windows control panel?
also, check that the card is recognised in device manager

There lies the problem mate, i'll explain

Install fresh xp
Install mobo drivers
install forceware drivers

result 4bit colour and res 800x600, no option to change any, no nvcpl.

Thats using the shipping drivers and the 91.47's. Also dont forget this was functioning fine until I got the error message whilst playing company of heroes. The card seems to have lost all its hardware acceleration functions from what I can gather. Also If I go into advanced from properties nv control panel is missing despite it appearing in msconfig. Its as if the drivers cant find the card.

there is no nvcpl in the extracted driver files?
could you try a modified driver set?

Sorry, my bad explanation, nvcpl is there it just wont load. It appears fine in control panel but double clicking wont access it, missing from advanced driver properties but present in the msconfig startup.

Will report back tomorrow when i've tried it in the other pc, cant be arsed to pull it to bits just now.

and you said that nvidia had fixed all the cards

I never said they fixed all the cards, i said they stopped producing them because they were borked, and replaced them with new models, obviously the new ones are borked as well. :(

thing is most of these graphics cards are only guaranteed 1 year
theres going to be a lot of unhappy people after the year is out
its a good job it happens right after you buy it

best way to test it, overclock the pants out of and hope it dies within a couple
of days rather than running it @ stock for over a year.

lol. good job they do, by the sounds of things. Had no idea how many problems they have had with these cards.

Sounds like RMA time to me.

Good news and bad news, firstly the card is running fine in an am2 3800+ x2 and epox combo. Bad news the card that came out of said pc wont work in the ds3 so it looks like i've got a motherboard fault:

Bugger

sounds more like a software problem but if you did a reformat and its still no go and your bios setings are correct then the board is faulty.

3 formats, shipping motherboard drivers, latest from the gigabyte site and lastly the intel reference drivers just for the chipset. Latest bios (f6) flashed last night and data reset. Also I seem to have lost the usb ports despite everything in device manager saying its fine.
